(Cazenovia, June 2013) On center stage in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, is \u201cFashion Takes Flight,\u201d presented by Susan Langley, the definitive authority on vintage hats.<\/p>\n

Langley discovered as a little girl that vintage hats and clothing are links to the past.\u00a0 When, as a child, she found her grandma\u2019s \u201cfunny\u201d hat in an old trunk, her grandmother said, \u201cSusie, my great-grandmother wore this hat to the train station to see Abraham Lincoln\u2019s funeral train when it came through Syracuse in 1865.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still fascinated with antique clothing as an adult, Langley has been collecting, researching and studying vintage wear since 1973.\u00a0 She has lectured and exhibited at various museums, antique shows, women\u2019s clubs, civic groups and television shows.<\/p>\n

Additionally, she has recently published the second edition of her very successful book Vintage Hats & Bonnets: 1770-1970 that contains more than 200 new color photos of existing hats and bonnets, beginning in the 18th century and progressing through the golden age of millinery to the 1970s.<\/p>\n

\u201cSue is the expert on vintage hats,\u201d said Library Director Betsy Kennedy.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s amazingly knowledgeable and enthusiastic and has been very helpful with our new exhibition, also called \u2018Fashion Takes Flight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

While Langley\u2019s collections include hats, dresses, shoes, coats, capes, shawls, fans, parasols and more, her focus at the June 5 presentation will be feathers in women\u2019s hats at the turn of the 20th century and the detrimental impact this fashion craze had on birds.<\/p>\n

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Friends of Lorenzo, this event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

The Wyeths: A Family Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

All are invited to the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, for \u201cThe Wyeths: A Family Legacy,\u201d an insightful commentary by Dr. Paul D\u2019Ambrosio, president and CEO of the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown.<\/p>\n

D\u2019Ambrosio has previously spoken at the Cazenovia Public Library on Winslow Homer, Frederic Edwin Church, Grandma Moses, Frederic Remington, John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper and American Impressionism.<\/p>\n

The Wyeths are one of the most famous and beloved artistic families of the 20th century.\u00a0 In addition to the father, Newel Convers Wyeth (known as N.C.), the Wyeth family legacy includes sons Andrew and James, as well as daughters Carolyn and Henriette and her husband Peter Hurd.<\/p>\n

The Wyeths have influenced each other\u2019s techniques, media, and subject matter and have taught each other back and forth across the generations.\u00a0 Art enthusiasts will revel in the formal beauty and underlying abstraction of a true American legacy (fenimoreartmuseum.org).<\/p>\n
