Dubik, superintendent of schools for Cazenovia Central School District since 2004, will retire when his current contract expires at the end of the 2013-14 academic year.

Dubik informed members of the Cazenovia Board of Education of his plans at their June 17 meeting. He notified district staff during an end-of-year celebration June 21.

“It was a tough decision,” Dubik said. “When you do something for 38 years, of course you’re going to miss it. But this is good timing. The district will be experiencing a lot of change over the next few years, with declining enrollment and the possible realignment of our buildings. The new superintendent can be at the forefront of those transitions.”

Dubik came to Cazenovia in 1991, to serve first as assistant principal of Cazenovia High School for three years, and then as principal at Burton Street Elementary for two years. He left the district in 1996 to become principal at Chestnut Hill Elementary School in the Liverpool Central School District.

In 1998, he accepted a position with Waterloo Central School District as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. In 2002, he left Waterloo to lead Port Byron Central Schools as superintendent. He returned to Cazenovia two years later as superintendent.

“Bob has skillfully and diligently served the district for many years and in several roles,” Board of Education President Fritz Koennecke said. “Under Bob’s leadership, we’ve accrued state and national acclaim for the quality of our programs.”

During Dubik’s tenure: Burton Street Elementary was one of 20 schools in the state to be recognized as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education; Cazenovia High School was ranked No. 903 (out of more than 26,000) on the Newsweek America’s Best High Schools list and No. 7 (out of 430 Upstate schools) by Buffalo-based business magazine Business First; and the high school’s Project Lead the Way, agriculture and music programs gained national and state recognition.

In his first year as superintendent, Dubik also introduced a community service requirement for all Cazenovia High School students. Members of the Class of 2013, for example, logged a total of 11,850 service hours throughout their four years of high school, Principal Eric Schnabl announced during the June 22 commencement ceremony.

“Bob’s leadership through trying financial times played a pivotal role in our district’s successes,” Koennecke, the board president, said. “We will certainly miss Bob when he retires next year and we’re glad that he was kind enough to give the board such early notice of his intentions, so we can develop the best possible succession and transition plans.”

A native of Erie, Pa., Dubik entered the education field in 1976, as a teacher at Holy Rosary School in his hometown. He moved to Central New York in 1980, to work at Fowler High School in the Syracuse City School District. At Fowler, he taught special education for five years and served as summer school principal. He later served as acting assistant principal at Seymour Elementary in Syracuse.

He has also coached Little League baseball, football, cross-country, basketball and tennis.

Dubik and his wife, Terri Fiumara-Dubik, who works for Syracuse city schools, plan to remain in Cazenovia. They have two grown sons.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here in Cazenovia,” Dubik said. “It’s a great place. My goal for this final year is the same one I’ve had every year: to maintain the high academic success we’ve had and that the Cazenovia community expects.”

(Cazenovia, NY – June 26, 2013) Robert S.
