(Herkimer, NY \u2013 July 2013) With the increasing interest in using more locally grown foods, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County (CCE) has prepared the \u201cHerkimer County Farm to Restaurant Connection\u201d that lists 50 farms that have indicated interest in selling their products to area restaurants and vendors when contacted about participation in the Herkimer County Local Foods Map (third edition).<\/p>\n
Funds for the map were provided by the NY State Department of Health \u201cCreating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play\u201d initiative (CHP) through the Herkimer County HealthNet.\u00a0 CHP programs across the state are working to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes by making it easier to be physically active and eat healthy foods.<\/p>\n
Support for printing and mailing the directory was provided by Herkimer County with a special thanks to Kathy Fox, Director, Herkimer County Office for Aging for designing the directory.<\/p>\n
The benefits of \u201ceating local\u201d are many including fresher foods that taste great and are often more nutritious than foods that have traveled many miles and days to get to your table.\u00a0 Also when you buy directly from local farmers, your dollars stay within your community and strengthen the local economy.\u00a0 This helps preserve farming as a livelihood and rural landscapes as farmland too.<\/p>\n
