Unless you have a very short memory, it’s the same safe message that the cigarette industry, Love Canal, Allied (Solvay), acid rain and many others have preached.

Guess what? None of the above was safe!

If farmers need to have the heavy industry of hydrofracking on their land at the expense of others, somebody needs to look real hard why the hardworking group of people can’t make a living unless there’s gas drilling.

Cattle have died from drinking water contaminated with spilled fracking fluids. Because of pollution, organic farmers could lose their certification. Land that is polluted is hard to sell. Somebody is making money in the farm industry while farmers suffer. Are the middlemen and corporate people being fair to farmers?

Foreign companies own many leases. How do we become energy-independent (often-stated) if much of our resources (oil and gas) are being sent overseas, and especially to countries that don’t allow fracking on their land because it’s too risky? What happens when our natural gas reserves are depleted?

Because of 1) non-disclosure agreements (buy outs), 2) gag orders on health , 3) no-fly zones in accident areas, 4) photos of the drilling and accidents are not allowed, and 5) exemptions from regulations that the gas companies enjoy – it makes it difficult to get facts regarding the heavy industry of hydrofracking.

In 2005 Congress exempted the gas industry from many environmental laws. Therefore, there is limited oversight by the EPA over the injection of fluids, including carcinogens, into the earth at high pressure; a process known as hydraulic fracturing (fracking). In 2011, Congressional investigations found that fracking fluids contained 750 chemicals hazardous to human health, including lead and cancer causing chemicals such as benzene and toluene. What happens when our fresh water supplies are diminished and spoiled by fracking?

There are many negatives effects of hydrofracking throughout the U.S. and the world. If you have any first- or secondhand information about this process, please share it. You or someone that you know might have worked, lived or traveled in areas of hydrofracking and could enlighten others of the problems that goes along with the process.

Also if you’re at least 18 years old and haven’t signed a petition for a moratorium or ban in your community – it needs to be done as thousands have done so already in Madison County. We will get the petition form to you quickly.

To grow the stop fracking movement at the local level and to meet like-minded folks we need you to contact us. Please contact Cheryl Cary, 315-440-5758, cherylcary1@gmail.com; or Joe Yankowski, 315-663-4162, PO Box 366, DeRuyter, N.Y. 13052.

If government officials don’t champion the concerns of the majority of their constituents – then why are they even there?

Joe Yankowski, DeRuyter

To The Editor: (DeRuyter, NY) Contamination will occur now and especially in the future – even though gas companies and some people say hydrofracking (fracking) is safe.
