{"id":49407,"date":"2013-08-27T07:30:42","date_gmt":"2013-08-27T11:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=49407"},"modified":"2013-08-26T21:12:51","modified_gmt":"2013-08-27T01:12:51","slug":"article-by-deputy-county-clerk-featured-in-ny-archives-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=49407","title":{"rendered":"Article by Deputy County Clerk Featured in NY Archives Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Denise Roe, Deputy County Clerk, is shown with a copy of the New York Archive magazine featuring her article titled A Natural Right to Knowledge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Wampsville, NY &#8211; Aug. 25, 2013) New York Archives Magazine has publish<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC_0139.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-49408\" alt=\"DSC_0139\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC_0139.jpg?resize=300%2C308\" width=\"300\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC_0139.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC_0139.jpg?resize=292%2C300&amp;ssl=1 292w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC_0139.jpg?resize=146%2C150&amp;ssl=1 146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>ed an article by Denise Roe, Madison County Deputy Clerk, about Madison County native Myrtilla Miner.\u00a0 \u201cA Natural Right to Knowledge\u201d is featured in the Spring 2013 edition.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Myrtilla Miner opened the first school for African American girls so they could teach others to support her conviction that education should be used as a tool to uplift oppressed groups.\u00a0 With $100, Miner began her endeavor in Washington DC in 1851 with 6 pupils.\u00a0 Within two months, she had 40 pupils.<\/p>\n<p>This was prior to the Civil War, and resentment was strong against Northern abolitionists meddling with local institutions.\u00a0 Miner had to fend off several attacks and move several times.\u00a0 She finally was able to buy a three-acre lot on the edge of the city.\u00a0 Even Frederick Douglass tried to discourage her, fearing for her safety.\u00a0 Supporters included Harriet Beecher Stowe, Johns Hopkins and Henry Ward Beecher.\u00a0 Her papers are held in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Miner\u2019s enterprise is educating students as the University of the District of Columbia Teachers College.<\/p>\n<p>Roe states, \u201cMiner is a shining example of what one dedicated Madison County woman can accomplish despite overwhelming odds.\u00a0 She is only one of many Madison County residents that have made important contributions to our world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Clerk\u2019s office is promoting Madison County\u2019s history using archival documents.\u00a0 Roe is quoted in the summer issue of Plank Road Magazine, \u201cBeing grounded, knowledgeable about our history reminds people of their civic obligations.\u00a0 As citizens of our community, we have a social contract to fulfill\u2026to be engaged in the democratic process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Denise Roe, Deputy County Clerk, is shown with a copy of the New York Archive magazine featuring her article titled A Natural Right to Knowledge.
