<\/a>(Hamilton, NY \u2013 Aug. 30, 2013) \u00a0In Colgate’s home opener\u00a0Thursday\u00a0night, the women’s soccer team saw\u00a0Sarah Coy\u00a0and\u00a0Taryn Tomczyk\u00a0score their first intercollegiate goals as they lifted the Raiders 3-0 over Siena.<\/p>\n“I’m really happy that the team has come together after kind of a rough start to the beginning of preseason,” head coach\u00a0Kathy Brawn\u00a0said. “The team has really risen to the challenges we have been asking of them.”<\/p>\n
Coy and Tomczyk were not the only ones to get on the scorecard for Colgate as\u00a0Sidney Parodie\u00a0also tallied the middle marker and her second goal of the season off a beautiful header.<\/p>\n
“We lost some key players last year and there is always that piece of the puzzle that you are trying to figure out,” Brawn adds. “But this team has come in and played with personality and have done everything we have asked of them. Their own creativity on the field has really made for some exciting soccer. As much as we want to win, we also want to be entertaining and when those two things come together it’s a lot of fun.”<\/p>\n
The Raiders dominated most of the possession throughout the game garnering a lot of the scoring opportunities.<\/p>\n
Colgate had two good chances on net 15-minutes into the first half.\u00a0Kelsey Hough\u00a0played the ball into\u00a0Catherine Williams\u00a0at the top of the 18-yard box. Williams then found\u00a0Jenna Raepple who riffled a shot on goal. After barely getting a hand on the shot, Siena’s goalie pushed the ball out of play for a Raiders corner kick.<\/p>\n
Off the short corner kick Colgate played the ball into the box, where a waiting\u00a0Chelsea Roche got her head on the ball. She redirected it on net but it sailed just high over the crossbar.<\/p>\n
The Raiders finally broke through at the 20-minute mark when Coy found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Tomczyk fed Coy the ball just outside the 18 where she beat her defender and smashed the ball on goal, giving Colgate the early lead.<\/p>\n
Just over 20 minutes later, the Raiders received another goal from Parodie to extend their advantage to 2-0 heading into halftime. The play started after rookie\u00a0Sophie Lederer\u00a0beat a Siena defender near the endline. She took a couple touches before crossing the ball to a waiting Parodie. Lederer’s cross landed perfectly on the head of Parodie, where she redirected it to the opposite side of the goal.<\/p>\n
The Raiders tallied one more goal in the second half to close out their scoring when Tomczyk notched one of her own. The play came following a long through ball by Williams to a running Lexi Panepinto, who came from the outside back position. Panepinto one touched the ball off the endline to Tomczyk, who shot low to the right-hand corner of the goal. The marker gave Tomczyk her first collegiate goal and three-point game of her career.<\/p>\n
Erin Cummings\u00a0got the start in net for Colgate, earning two saves in 70 minutes of work. Senior\u00a0Emma Giegerich\u00a0played the last 20 minutes making one save for the Raiders.<\/p>\n
Colgate is back on the pitch\u00a0Sunday\u00a0when it travels to nearby Syracuse for a showdown with the Orange at\u00a07 p.m.\u00a0The game will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports.<\/p>\n
