Colgate improved in the standings and laid the groundwork for even better days ahead.

“Everybody displayed at some point the ability to play consistent golf at a high level, which was really encouraging,” Colgate head coach Keith Tyburski said. “It’s their first event, so I’m sure there were some nerves. But I was proud of how they responded.

“The conditions were very inconsistent from round to round – the first round was great, the second round was kind of drizzly and today was windy. They battled through the conditions and showed some toughness.”

Bishop Bounces Back

Tyburski carries six first-year golfers on his eight-man roster, and four of those rookies made this weekend’s starting lineup. Bishop is one of the grizzled veterans in just his second season, and he led the way Sunday with a sparkling 74.

“I had a rough day Saturday but I came out today and wanted to put a good round together to help out the team,” Bishop said. “It’s nice that I was able to do that in tougher conditions than Saturday.

“I got a good night’s sleep last night, stayed patient and just trusted my game. I knew I could hit shots in the wind even though it was tough. I didn’t make many putts but I hit the ball really well, so it was good.

Bishop was particularly effective on Seven Oaks’ four par fives.

“I birdied three of them,” he said. “They were still pretty tough – a couple of them played into the wind. But you just pick your spots and lay up to a good yardage. Then I could hit a nice wedge shot and I was able to make a few putts there.”

Behind Bishop, Ryan Allison closed with 78 while Chris Wilson and Robbie Yosaitis posted matching 80s. Ian Lynch added an 83. Playing as individuals, Kevin Godart shot 83, Henry Wesson 85 and Alex Lagowitz 85.

Newcomer Likes Team Concept

Allison led the Colgate finishers at 15-over 231, tying for 29th place. The Melbourne, Fla., product admitted nerves played a part in his first collegiate tournament.

“In all three rounds, I had places where I thought I could shoot really well,” he said. “I didn’t really put a round together both days, but averaging 77 when I didn’t play as well as I thought isn’t the end of the world and I’m not too mad. I also was really nervous, so it’s a good stepping stone for the future.

Allison enjoyed the collegiate format, especially the part about having teammates.

“It’s different playing college – a lot more team-oriented than high school,” Allison said. “And I actually liked it a lot more because you support the other guys and ask how they’re doing. It’s just a different experience and I had a great time in my first tournament.

“We’re a really young team with a lot of energy and a ton of talent. We can be really good. They’re all great guys and we’re really motivated to change the identity of Colgate golf. We want to be really competitive in the Patriot League and hopefully further.”

Wilson was Colgate’s next-highest finisher in 32nd place at 16-over 232, followed by Bishop in a tie for 33rd at 17-over 233, Yosaitis in 47th at 21-over 237 and Lynch in a tie for 53rd at 24-over 240. Colgate’s individual finishers were Wesson also at plus-24 240, Lagowitz in a tie for 59th at 25-over 241 and Godart in 65th at 28-over 244.

“I was very pleased with our guys this week,” Tyburski said. “They’re really a tight-knit group that is going to be able to push and feed off each other. Moving forward, I don’t see any cap to what we can do.”

Bucknell Next

Binghamton placed three golfers among the top five individuals and rallied to win the team trophy, closing with an 8-over 296 to finish at 16-over 880. Second-round leader and defending champion Youngstown State fell to 307 Sunday and finished eight shots back at 888.

Patriot League members Lehigh (891), Army (892) and Bucknell (906) rounded out the team top five, while Lafayette’s Jared Mactas posted his second sub-par round of the tournament with a Sunday 71 for a two-stroke victory. Mactas finished at 1-under-par 215.

“We had a great field this week, and it’s nice to see both league schools and non-league schools,” Tyburski said. “It’s just a pleasure to welcome these teams to Seven Oaks and showcase what we have.
