\"Frank_SaveALot\"<\/a>(Utica, NY \u2013 Oct. 2013)The Literacy Coalition of Herkimer & Oneida Counties announced at their September meeting the results of the summer book drive and phase 1 of the community bookshelves project for Herkimer and Oneida Counties.\u00a0 During the summer-long project, beginning May 20, 2013, over 12,000 new and gently used books were donated by over 50 corporate and community organizations throughout Herkimer and Oneida Counties.\u00a0 To date there are over 20 bookshelves, branded EZREAD, located in businesses, nonprofits and government agencies where reading is not the main reason a person would visit the locale.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of this summer project was twofold,\u201d stated Lara Sepanski, Pimentel, executive director of the Literacy Coalition.\u00a0 \u201cWe wanted to encourage summer reading and increase access to reading materials throughout our two-county service area.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project was conceived by the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL) Youth Leadership Group, a group of young adults with a range of physical and mental disabilities. \u201cIt was the perfect storm,\u201d exclaimed Pimentel. \u201cThe Youth Leadership Group wanted to do something to benefit the community, and thought of a book drive. The Coalition wanted a way to make sure the community had access to read the books.\u201d\u00a0 The result was a three way collaboration of the Literacy Coalition, United Way and RCIL.\u00a0 \u201cEach organization had a different role,\u201d stated Pimentel.\u00a0 \u201cRCIL tackled the book sorting and warehousing, the United Way managed the drive portion and we were contacted by the United Way to facilitate the distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The initial phase of the community project is complete; however the Literacy Coalition is encouraging community support of this project to continue.\u00a0 According to Pimentel, the project has been so well received; the program has been expanded to encourage year-round access to books. \u201cWe want to encourage the community to donate to the bookshelves,\u201d explained Pimentel.\u00a0 \u201cMany homes do not have any reading materials.\u00a0 The more communities hosting bookshelves and donations to the shelves, the more reading materials we can get into the hands of people who need books. In essence, the bookshelves have become a tool for building community through literacy,\u201d she continued.\u00a0 \u201cCommunity engagement is the only way we can truly increase literacy rates.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting the community involved in reading opens doors for people,\u201d noted Frank-Michael Drayton, a Literacy Coalition member and bookshelf volunteer. \u201cI was happy to volunteer for the bookshelf project and think getting books into people\u2019s hands is a good first step to encourage kids and families to read together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those wishing to donate new or gently used book can drop off handfuls of books at the existing EZ Read bookshelves locations for community circulation.\u00a0 Larger donations may be dropped off at 199 W. Dominick St. Rome at the\u00a0Neighborhood Center,\u00a0401 E German St. Herkimer at United Way\u2019s office, 508 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0St. Utica at BOCES or 524 Elizabeth St in Utica at MVCC EOC.<\/p>\n
