{"id":51402,"date":"2013-11-07T12:30:31","date_gmt":"2013-11-07T17:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=51402"},"modified":"2013-11-06T16:46:56","modified_gmt":"2013-11-06T21:46:56","slug":"undeserved-blessings-in-the-eoh-east-gallery-molly-macbean-shaw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=51402","title":{"rendered":"Undeserved Blessings in the EOH East Gallery: Molly MacBean Shaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Molly-Shaw-When-she-saw-a-wild-thing32x18-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-51403\" alt=\"Molly Shaw When she saw a wild thing32x18\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Molly-Shaw-When-she-saw-a-wild-thing32x18-.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Molly-Shaw-When-she-saw-a-wild-thing32x18-.jpg 300w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Molly-Shaw-When-she-saw-a-wild-thing32x18--150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>(Earlville NY \u2013 Nov. 2013) Hamilton artist Molly Shaw will open her new exhibit \u201cUndeserved Blessings\u201d in the East Gallery of the Earlville Opera House with a reception on Saturday, Nov. 16, from noon to 3 p.m.\u00a0 Shaw\u2019s journey to becoming an artist is anything but typical.\u00a0 She grew up in Oakland, Calif. in the 1960s and 1970s, spending much of her time out of doors and with animals.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1980s she studied Wildlife Ecology and Journalism, and later Horticulture, after which she created her own edible landscaping business.\u00a0 She received a teaching degree and spent several years teaching third grade and English as a second language in California, New Mexico, Alaska, and Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 2001, Shaw spent eight years farming in Vermont, where she collected maple syrup and built a sustainable housing community with 22 families.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw didn\u2019t take her first painting class until 2005, in Fairbanks, Alaska, where she lived for a year in a 300-square-foot cabin with no running water.\u00a0 With outside temperatures often 20-40 below zero, she spent a lot of time in her studio; it was open 24 hours, and it had both heat and running water.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 2013 that she received her MFA from Johnson State College in Vermont.\u00a0 She exhibited her work at the Vermont Studio Center between 2008 and 2011, and was an adjunct instructor in drawing there in the spring of 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw is a member of the Broad Street Gallery cooperative.\u00a0 Her paintings arise from intuition found in a quiet, colorful, and meditative state.\u00a0 She rarely plans her paintings.\u00a0 Instead, they arrive organically from intuition, myth, and music.\u00a0 She articulates that her images from the natural world reflect a deep connection with all life wherein the animals she paints are often attempting to awaken the human figures, to lead them (and us) away from our destructive stupor.\u00a0 Her paintings are sacred stories, the ethereal made visible, while always leaving something unknown and unfinished, leaving space for wonder and hope.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit will run through Dec. 28. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 am-5 pm and Saturday 12-3 pm.
