The effort is designed to encourage Madison County residents to experience the joy of pet adoption.

The annual Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive was founded by the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The campaign, which runs from Oct. 1 through Jan. 2 unites more than 3,500 partner organizations with a focused goal of placing orphaned pets into loving homes.

The Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive began with a growing concern for the number of rescue facilities closing their doors during the holiday seasons. In seeking the perfect holiday gift, would-be adopters were forced to resort to pet stores or puppy mills.

Additionally, pet store staffers, untrained to assess the likelihood of a successful animal/family match, contributed to an increased number of pets sent to shelters once the season was over. The Home 4 the Holidays Campaign asks rescue facilities to keep their doors open and get the word out. The program has grown into the largest pet adoption drive in the world and is credited with saving more than 8 million pets across the globe since its inception in 1999.

“With as many as 7 million homeless pets in the U.S., it is important everyone get involved to help save an orphaned animal this holiday season,” said Denise Adams. “We’re proud to be a part of this amazing campaign and are dedicated to placing orphaned pets in homes so they can experience a happy new life.

“The team here at Wanderers’ Rest is specially trained and can help families choose the perfect pet for their personalities and lifestyles. We can’t think of anything better than seeing these beautiful cats and dogs find their loving, forever families this holiday season.”

Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association, 30 years strong, is an open-admission shelter in Canastota, New York, that serves more than 1,000 cats and dogs each year. Wanderers’ Rest accepts unwanted or stray dogs and cats from Madison County, but is open to all Central New Yorkers who wish to adopt a dog or cat.

Wanderers’ Rest was founded in 1981 by a group of citizens who wanted to do more than impound stray animals in Madison County. Their vision for a comprehensive humane organization emphasized caring for and preparing homeless cats and dogs for adoption. Today Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association shelters, heals and enriches up to 1,500 cats and dogs each year. The organization finds new homes for unwanted animals, reunites lost pets with their families, and supports low-income families with spay/neuter assistance and emergency pet food to enable them to afford and keep their pets. Educational programs in area schools emphasize spaying and neutering and responsible pet ownership for the next generation of pet-lovers.

Through its public education programs, the shelter promotes responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals everywhere. Wanderers’ Rest is a non-profit, 501c3 organization that welcomes contributions and volunteers.
