{"id":53065,"date":"2014-01-18T10:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-01-18T15:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=53065"},"modified":"2014-01-18T06:54:09","modified_gmt":"2014-01-18T11:54:09","slug":"morrisville-state-to-host-high-school-skills-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=53065","title":{"rendered":"Morrisville State to host high school skills contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Morrisville-state-logo.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-36354\" alt=\"Morrisville state logo\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Morrisville-state-logo.bmp\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Morrisville, NY \u2013 Jan. 2014) Approximately 900 high school students from 18 schools will have the opportunity to showcase a multitude of skills and talents in the Region II BOCES Skills USA competition being hosted\u00a0Feb. 13\u00a0at Morrisville State.<\/p>\n<p>The annual conference features high school students from technical schools and BOCES programs throughout Central New York competing in a variety of events.<\/p>\n<p>The competition includes approximately 60 contests ranging from entrepreneurship, nurse assisting, job interviews, commercial baking, culinary arts, and cosmetology, to collision repair technology, carpentry, welding and electrical construction wiring.<\/p>\n<p>Contests will be held throughout the campus including at the college\u2019s auto and wood technology buildings, Bailey Hall and the Copper Turret, a fine dining restaurant run by the college. They will begin at\u00a09:30 a.m.\u00a0and some contests will run through mid-afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event provides students with an opportunity to showcase their skills, and it also exposes them to our\u00a0\u00a0 academic programs, services and state-of-the-art facilities,\u201d said Sarah Mazza, assistant director of dining services for the Morrisville Auxiliary Corporation (MAC).<\/p>\n<p>Competitions will be judged by Morrisville State faculty, students, and industry and education representatives. The college will be offering scholarship opportunities to some of the award winners.<\/p>\n<p>An awards ceremony will follow the contests with trophies awarded to the top three finishers in each competition. The top winners in each category go on to compete in the statewide competition.
