Canton is now 3-12-2 overall on the season.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams were heated competitors in the former days as members of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA), before making the transition to Division III of the NCAA. The rivalry kicked up fast and furious in the opening minutes of the contest as it was a battle in the middle of the ice before Joe Santino (Woodbridge, ON) broke the scoreless encounter with a power play goal inside the left post off the cross from Steve Dol (Ingersoll, ON) and Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, ON) on the right.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State extended the lead to two with 1:36 to go in the first frame, with Carvalho one-timing the cross from John Doyle (New Lowell, ON) on the left post, closing out the period with a 2-0 Mustang lead as both scores came on special teams opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Zach Paisley made it a one goal game late in the second period, firing a shot from center ice over the left shoulder of Morrisville State netminder Jakob Rasmussen (Vallentuna, SE) on the power play for Canton with 1:24 to go.<\/p>\n<p>Just over a minute into the third period, Dol fed the puck to Matt Scherer (Elgin, Ill.) on the right, who crossed it to Zach Baker (Denver, Colo.) on the back door cut for a quick wrist shot and 3-1 Mustang lead.<\/p>\n<p>Paisley struck again for the Roos with his second power play score of the night at the 7:42 mark into the period, poking the feed into the net from the top of the crease. Sam McLaughlin and Kristian Leach were credited with the assists, cutting the Morrisville State lead to just one.<\/p>\n<p>Canton\u2019s Nick Vasilopoulos capitalized on a Mustang turnover at their own blue line and had a breakaway just inside four minutes remaining, firing the tying score inside the right pipe to force the overtime period.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams had ample chances in the extra frame to put the game away, neither could find the back of the net as shot after shot sailed wide. Canton\u2019s best opportunity came right after Morrisville State was caught with too many men on the ice during a line change, but Rasmussen twice held on to the puck to prevent a score.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State played the final minute of the contest with an extra man as Canton was whistled for hooking, but the Mustangs couldn\u2019t get a shot to the net as the Roos stuffed the center.<\/p>\n<p>Rasmussen posted 14 saves on the night for the Mustangs, recording the tie, while Morgan Barr registered 31 in net for Canton, including 12 in the third.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State was 2-for-4 in power plays on the night, holding the 34-17 advantage in shots.<\/p>\n<p><b>Morrisville State women struggle, drop 51-35 road decision to Penn St. Abington<\/b><\/p>\n<p>(Abington, Pa. \u2013 Jan. 18, 2014) The Morrisville State College women\u2019s basketball team struggled on the road Saturday\u00a0afternoon, dropping a 51-35 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) decision to host Penn State Abington.<\/p>\n<p>The loss is the ninth for the Mustangs on the season, as they fall to 4-9 overall, 2-4 in NEAC play, while the Nittany Lions improve to a 3-8 overall mark, picking up their first conference win for a 1-5 conference record.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Anderson (West Edmeston, N.Y.) was the lone Morrisville State player to reach double figures, notching 12 points in the efforts, while teammate Kaitlyn Griffin (Brewerton, N.Y.) added seven points and three steals.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State Abington got a double-double performance out of Jessica Schmidt who led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds, as the Nittany Lions dominated the boards 37-21 over the Mustangs.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State had a slow first half, connecting on only 6-of-22 shots as Abington raced out to the 29-14 lead after the opening 20.<\/p>\n<p>They put together a better effort in the second, but struggled to stop the Nittany Lions from collecting the win.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State returns to the court\u00a0Wednesday, traveling to cross town rival Cazenovia College for an 8 p.m.\u00a0tip.<\/p>\n<p><b>Third period lifts Valiants over Morrisville State<\/b><\/p>\n<p>(Morrisville, NY \u2013 Jan. 18, 2014) \u00a0Visiting Manhattanville College hockey scored three times in the final period, to hand host Morrisville State College a 6-3 non-conference decision Saturday night in Morrisville.<br \/>\nThe loss drops the Mustangs to 4-10-2 overall, while the Valiants improve to 10-6.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State had three post goals on the night, including Joe Santino (Woodbridge, ON), John Doyle (New Lowell, ON) and Rob Molinaro (Yonkers, N.Y.).<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Azzano (Oshawa, ON) registered 26 saves in the losing effort for the Mustangs, including 13 in the final frame.<\/p>\n<p>Playing to a scoreless contest, Manhattanville was able to put one on the board at the 15:23 mark, capitalizing off a Mustang turnover within their own defensive zone and firing the stick side shot past Azzano for the 1-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Seconds into the second frame, Santino evened the score at one, flicking the wrist shot over the glove of Valiant goaltender Brian Fleming at 00:58.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattanville regained the one goal lead at 5:18 as Adam Platt put away the wrist shot on a center cut feed from Anton Rackin. Within seconds, the Valiants added another for a two goal cushion.<\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs made it a 3-2 game midway through the period on a power play, as Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, ON) made a break on the right side of the ice and crossed the puck to Doyle on the left who put away the one-timer to cut the visitor lead to one at 12:35.<\/p>\n<p>Late in the third, Manhattanville regained the two goal advantage, deflecting the puck on the right side of the crease off a feed from the left corner, before adding another tally minutes later on a wide open look at net for a 5-2 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Molinaro brought the Mustangs to within two as he collected the rebound off a Tyson Avery (Monkton, ON) bullet from blue line at 16:59, but the Valiants added another score in the final seconds to secure the win.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State held Manhattanville scoreless in power play opportunities, while connecting on 2-of-6 chances of their own.<\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs return to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Friday, Jan. 24, hosting SUNY Brockport.<\/p>\n<p><b>Morrisville State men roll past Gallaudet, collect 69-50 NEAC win<\/b><\/p>\n<p>(Washington DC \u2013 Jan. 19, 2014) The Morrisville State College men\u2019s basketball team rebounded from a tough loss yesterday, and collected a crucial North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory, as they rolled past Gallaudet University 69-50\u00a0Sundayafternoon in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>The win lifts the Mustangs to 7-6 overall, 4-3 in NEAC play, keeping them within the top three teams in the conference standings to date.<\/p>\n<p>Senior guard Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Morrisville State charge, posting a team high 15 points and nine rebounds, while compiling three assists. Kucjok Ater (Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points and snagged eight boards, as teammate Will Thomas (Morrisville, N.Y.) came off the bench to add a season high 11 points and team best two steals to the win.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State got a balanced effort from Tom Wilk (Cortland, N.Y.) who tallied eight points and four rebounds, but also recorded four assists, one steal and three blocks in the paint.<\/p>\n<p>Gallaudet\u2019s Anton Jackson posted 17 points in the efforts for the Bison, while Orion Palmer added 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State led by just four at the break (32-28), before putting together a 7-0 run at the start of the second to claim the 11 point lead early on in the final period.<\/p>\n<p>Gallaudet climbed back within six with\u00a014:45\u00a0to go, but a three-point play by Caleb Wright (Cortland, N.Y.) sparked a 14-2 spurt for the Mustangs over the next four minutes, giving the visitors the 16 point cushion midway through.<\/p>\n<p>Trey Gordon drained one from long range for the Bison, cutting the deficit to 12 with just over seven minutes to play, but Morrisville State would limit the hosts to just eight additional points, while collecting 15 of their own over the remainder of the contest to post the conference win.<\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs shot 41.5 percent from the floor on 27-of-65 shots on the day, including 6-of-20 from long range, holding Gallaudet to 35.8 percent from the floor on 19-of-53 attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State dominated the glass, 46-32, while getting 16 second chance opportunities, to the Bison\u2019s nine.<\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs return to the court\u00a0Wednesday, Jan. 22, traveling to cross town rival Cazenovia College for a\u00a06 p.m.\u00a0tipoff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old rivalry ends in draw as Morrisville State, Canton play to 3-3 overtime tie Stories by\u00a0Brandy Thurston, Director of Sports Information (Morrisville, NY \u2013Jan 17, 2014) \u00a0In a rematch from the past, Morrisville State College and SUNY Canton battled it out on the ice Friday night, playing to a 3-3 overtime draw in Morrisville.
