Joss, 55, of Lacona, was riding his 2002 Polaris 700 snowmobile on the train tracks when his sled apparently became stuck on the rails.\u00a0 Joss was attempting to free his sled when he and the sled were struck by a southbound CSX freight train.<\/p>\n<p>Joss was\u00a0observed by the train conductor from an extended\u00a0distance.\u00a0 The emergency brake was applied and\u00a0air horn was sounded\u00a0for an extended period of time.\u00a0 Despite the oncoming train, Joss continued to attempt to free his sled from the tracks before being struck; Joss was pronounced deceased at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The collision occurred between the Harwood Drive and Miller Road rail crossings.<\/p>\n<p>State Police were assisted at the scene by the Oswego Co. Sheriff&#8217;s Office, CSX Railroad Police, and the Lacona Fire Department.\u00a0 The investigation is continuing by CSX authorities and the New York State Police.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0State Police Investigate Crash in Town of Scriba<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Pulaski, NY \u2013 Jan. 20, 2014)\u00a0State Police in Pulaski are investigating a 2 car accident that occurred at approximately 12:55 p.m. Jan. 20 at the intersection of Middle Road and County Route 29 in the Town of Scriba.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation revealed a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria (NYSP patrol car), operated by Trooper Eric Parsons\u00a0was traveling east on Middle Road approaching the intersection of County Route 29.\u00a0 A 2004 Pontiac, operated by\u00a0Penny A. Morehouse, age 48, from Redwood was headed north on CR 29 when Trooper Parsons failed to stop at the stop sign, enter the intersection, causing Morehouse to strike the patrol car on the passenger\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>Both vehicles then travelled off the northeast corner of the intersection and coming to rest in an open field.<\/p>\n<p>Parsons was transported to Upstate Medical center for treatment of a minor facial abrasion and lower back pain.\u00a0 He is a 28 year veteran of the State Police.<\/p>\n<p>Morehouse was transported to Upstate Medical Center by Menter Ambulance for treatment of left hip and chest pain.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation is continuing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lacona man struck and killed by train while riding snowmobile on train tracks (Lacona, NY \u2013 Jan. 20, 2014)\u00a0\u00a0 On Jan. 19 at approximately 11:09 p.m. the New York State Police in Pulaski responded to a report of a Freight Train vs. Snowmobile collision in the Village of Lacona.
