Jan. 2014) Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney (R,C,I-New Hartford) recently announced that she is sponsoring a measure to combat human trafficking as part of a package of bills designed to promote women\u2019s equality. \u00a0The bill would deter human trafficking and make prosecution and enforcement more effective.<\/p>\n<p>Tenney\u2019s bill (S.5879) would increase criminal penalties for those who engage in human trafficking, expand the scope of certain \u201cpromoting prostitution\u201d crimes along with the crime of compelling prostitution, create an affirmative defense in prostitution prosecution where the defendant\u2019s participation was a result of having been a trafficking victim, and make it easier for trafficking victims to receive services from the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman trafficking is a crime against the dignity of people, mostly women, and it is fitting that New York should take a strong stance against the practice and back it up with tough penalties for those who violate the rights of women,\u201d said Tenney.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is part of a package of bills introduced today to promote women\u2019s equality.\u00a0 The nine bills introduced today by members of the Assembly Minority Conference were passed in the Senate last year, and must pass both houses in 2014 to become law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Assemblywoman Tenney fights for women\u2019s rights by reforming human trafficking laws (New Hartford, NY &#8211;
