{"id":53916,"date":"2014-03-03T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T15:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=53916"},"modified":"2014-03-02T10:27:48","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T15:27:48","slug":"sign-up-for-email-notices-at-the-canastota-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=53916","title":{"rendered":"Sign up for Email Notices at the Canastota Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March Events Scheduled<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Beth-Totten.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34630\" alt=\"Beth Totten\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Beth-Totten-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>By Beth Totten, public relations specialist<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Canastota, NY \u2013 March 2014) Technology changes all the time and often makes our lives richer.\u00a0 Want to make your life a little easier?\u00a0 Why not consider signing up for e-mail notices from the library?\u00a0 E-mail notices include notification that an item you requested is available for pick-up, notification three days before an item is due at the library and notification that items you have checked out are overdue.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s very easy to get your email address added to the MidYork site for these notices.\u00a0 Just send an email to:\u00a0 librarynotice@midyork.org with your name and library card number.\u00a0 Then, watch for MidYork\u2019s reply to your email within five business days and you are set to begin receiving email notices from the library.<\/p>\n<p>Users who decide to receive notices via email should alter span or junk mail filter settings to allow mail from MidYork.org.\u00a0 To get current information on things you have requested, you can check your account by signing into the e-library catalog at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.midyork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.midyork.org<\/a> or follow the link from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canastotalibrary.org\/\">www.canastotalibrary.org<\/a>.\u00a0 Please be assured that the library will never use your email address to send you other information without your specific permission.<\/p>\n<p>The library offers books, periodicals, DVDs and so much more to the community.\u00a0 When was the last time you stopped into the Canastota Public Library?\u00a0 Perhaps one of these upcoming programs will have you marching into the library in March!<\/p>\n<p>Therese Gena is the artist for the month of March. Her display is titled, \u201cArt without Rules.\u201d Therese works with a variety of mediums and\u00a0styles from realism to abstract and continually explores new techniques, styles, and methods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to creating, re-making, discovering, or learning a new technique, I am pro-active. \u00a0I think of myself, both as the learner and the teacher,\u201d Gina said.<\/p>\n<p>This experimentation, trial and error, and a \u201cnever afraid to fail attitude\u201d provides valuable lessons, which Therese readily teaches to her students or shares with other artists.<\/p>\n<p>An Artist\u2019s Reception will be held on Tuesday, March 4 at 7pm.\u00a0 At the reception, Therese will provide an art demonstration.\u00a0 The reception and show will be held in the Lawson Community Room.\u00a0 The art will be on display there all month long.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, March 10,\u00a0at 7 pm, the Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Canastota Public Library will host an enjoyable and meaningful Canalside Talk by Madison County Historian, Matthew Urtz entitled \u201cThe Contribution of Madison County Women to History\u201d at the Canastota Public Library.\u00a0 In honor of women\u2019s history month, Urtz will showcase Madison County\u2019s history of progressive women who worked to better the world they lived in.\u00a0 Hannah Palmer, a distinguished Civil War nurse, is just one of many women highlighted.\u00a0 The talk is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, March 11 at 7 pm, Susan Goodier will visit the library to discuss her book, \u201cNo Votes for Women:\u00a0 The New York State Anti-Suffrage Movement.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo Votes for Women\u201d explores the complicated history of the suffrage movement in New York State by delving into the stories of women who opposed the expansion of voting rights to women.\u00a0 Goodier is a Scholar-In-Residence at Hamilton College and also is also a museum consultant at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation in Fayetteville, NY.\u00a0 Books will be available for purchase at this event.<\/p>\n<p>If you love writing short stories, songs and poetry, why not attend our Open Mic Night on Wednesday, March 12 at 7pm.\u00a0 An open microphone format will allow anyone who writes to join in by reading or performing their poetry, songs and short stories.\u00a0 Master of Ceremonies Glenn Miley will begin the festivities with a performance of some of his writing.\u00a0 This is the second year that the Evening Writer\u2019s Group has hosted an event such as this.\u00a0 If you plan to participate, please contact the library so we can add your name to our roster of speakers.<\/p>\n<p>The Canastota Central Schools is hosting their annual Heath and Wellness Fair on Thursday, March 20 from 6 \u2013 8pm.\u00a0 Stop by and visit us at our booth.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be giving some items away and want to talk to you about the library. And, you will want to check out all the other businesses and programs that will be attending.\u00a0 There will also be student displays and presentations that night.\u00a0 Hope to see you there.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, March 25 at 1pm, our Book Chat will talk about the book, \u201cMrs. Lincoln\u2019s Dressmaker,\u201d by Jennifer Chiaverini. The novel explores how the former slave, Elizabeth Keckley bought her freedom and came to Washington and became a famous dressmaker to the important women in the city.\u00a0 The novel also probes her relationship with both President and Mrs. Lincoln.\u00a0 We hope you will stop in and join the Book Chat discussion.\u00a0 The group meets in the Carnegie Room on the library\u2019s second floor.\u00a0 It is accessible by the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCNY Reads One Book Initiative\u201d is reading the book, \u201cThe Namesake\u201d by Jhumpa Lahiri.\u00a0 Anyone participating is asked to read the book between January and March 2014.\u00a0 The book, named a \u201cBest Book of 2003\u201d by The New York Times, USA Today and Entertainment Weekly includes themes of the immigrant experience, culture clashes and difficulties between generations.\u00a0 The Canastota Public Library will show the movie, \u201cThe Namesake\u201d on Monday, March 31 beginning at 6pm in the Lawson Community Room.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve read the book, you might want to stop in and watch the movie.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in learning about other programs at the library, please refer to our website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canastotalibrary.org \" target=\"_blank\">www.canastotalibrary.org <\/a>or call us at 697-7030.\u00a0 Our website features our weekly programming as well as special monthly programs.<\/p>\n<p>The library is located at 102 W.
