{"id":54321,"date":"2014-03-22T15:00:39","date_gmt":"2014-03-22T19:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=54321"},"modified":"2014-03-21T14:14:37","modified_gmt":"2014-03-21T18:14:37","slug":"its-time-to-get-your-geek-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=54321","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s Time To Get Your Geek On"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canastota Public Library News<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Beth-Totten.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34630\" alt=\"Beth Totten\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Beth-Totten-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>By Elizabeth Totten, public relations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Canastota, NY \u2013 March 2014) Residents of Canastota and patrons who visit the Canastota Public Library may soon add a new verb to their vocabulary:\u201cgeek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canastota Public Library is participating in Geek the Library, a community-based public awareness campaign.\u00a0 The campaign highlights what people are passionate about and how libraries can support them, in an effort to heighten awareness about the critical funding issues that public libraries face.<\/p>\n<p>Geek the Library features local educational material that introduces \u201cgeek\u201d as a verb, and encourages the public to talk about what they \u201cgeek\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s engineering, superheroes or art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public awareness campaign illustrates the fact that everyone is passionate about something \u2013and the library supports them all,\u201d said Liz Metzger, Library Director.<\/p>\n<p>The Canastota Public Library kicked off its campaign March 20 at the Canastota High School\u2019s Health and Wellness Fair.\u00a0 At the Fair, the public was able to browse library information concerning programming and could tell the library what they \u201cgeek\u201d on a special \u201cgeek board\u201d that was on display.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis campaign is designed to provoke conversation about the vital role that public libraries and librarians play in today\u2019s challenging environment,\u201d said Cathy DeRosa, global vice president of marketing for OCLC, a nonprofit library cooperative, which led campaign development and conducted a pilot campaign from June 2009 to April 2010.\u00a0 \u201cWe hope it will spark important community discussions about how public libraries can remain strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staff from the Canastota Public Library plan to take time to get out into the community to talk to its residents and will be available at various public events and businesses throughout the spring and summer months.\u00a0 The awareness campaign also features advertising, social networking elements, a Web site and grassroots community initiatives to draw attention to the need for increased library support.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign web site, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekthelibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.geekthelibrary.org<\/a>, provides information about how people can get active and support their local library.<\/p>\n<p>As the economic downturn slowly recovers, millions of Americans are turning to local libraries for educational opportunities, job-searching resources and entertainment.\u00a0 The increased demand for library services is taking a toll on libraries already experiencing flat or decreasing budgets.\u00a0 And state and local cuts are impacting public library hours, programs and staffing, forcing some libraries to close indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>While most people have visited their public library and understand its important role in their community, many do not understand that libraries are at risk or that local funding for libraries is heavily influenced by community members.<\/p>\n<p>This public awareness campaign hopes to start a conversation about library funding to inspire more people to take personal responsibility for keeping their local public libraries vital in their communities.\u00a0 The campaign will not support or oppose any candidate for public office, nor attempt to influence legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The Canastota Public Library is located at 102 W.
