{"id":54470,"date":"2014-03-30T11:00:07","date_gmt":"2014-03-30T15:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=54470"},"modified":"2014-03-26T15:07:44","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T19:07:44","slug":"what-do-you-geek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=54470","title":{"rendered":"What Do You Geek?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canastota Public Library news<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Beth-Totten.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34630\" alt=\"Beth Totten\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Beth-Totten-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>By Beth Totten, public relations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Canastota, NY \u2013 March 2014) The Canastota Public Library wants to know \u201cWhat do you Geek?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGeek\u201d in this case, is a verb meaning to love, to enjoy, to celebrate, to have an intense passion for, to express interest in and to possess a large amount of knowledge in.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cgeek\u201d campaign highlights what people are passionate about and how libraries can support them.\u00a0 This month, the library has a \u201cgeek\u201d display near the Circulation Desk and we hope you will stop by and tell us what you \u201cgeek.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Organized by OCLC, a nonprofit library cooperative, the campaign is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>During the month of April, the Canastota Public Library is geeking music, art, authors and more.\u00a0 These programs are always designed with our patrons\u2019 needs and requests in mind.\u00a0 The programs are brought to you free or for a modest fee.\u00a0 If there is a program you geek that you would like the library to offer, please contact us and let us know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross the Sea\u201d is our April Art Show at the Library.\u00a0 Artists Clare Willson and her son, Adam Jones created a mixed media show to run the entire month of April in our Lawson Community Room.<\/p>\n<p>The pair moved to the United States from their native Great Britain in 1993.\u00a0 Clare is a native Brit.\u00a0 Trained as a scientist, she always had a passion for art.\u00a0 Health reasons forced Clare to consider new ways to express her \u201cgeek.\u201d Now paralyzed on her left side, due to MS, she taught herself to paint with her right hand.\u00a0 Clare creates whimsical images.\u00a0 She is a member of the Associated Artists of Central New York and lives with her husband in DeWitt.<\/p>\n<p>Her son Adam\u2019s passion for drawing began at an early age.\u00a0 Throughout elementary school, Adam entered local and statewide art contests.\u00a0 He is experienced in many diverse techniques though he frequently draws in black ink, using line as a basis for shading and textures.\u00a0 Jones works as a freelance artist and designer for business and individuals in the state of Virginia where he now resides.<\/p>\n<p>An art reception for the Mother-Son duo will be held on Wednesday, April 9 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Lawson Community Room.<\/p>\n<p>If you have ever wanted to plunge into Social Networking or just learn more about social media, you might want to attend our Social Networking Workshop set for Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m.\u00a0 In this class on personal social networking, we will look at Facebook, Twitter and using RSS feeds to follow websites and blogs.\u00a0 Social networking is a great way to connect or reconnect with family and friends that live in a different community.\u00a0 Please call the library at 697-7030 to reserve your space for this Social Networking Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Monday April 7 at 7 p.m.\u00a0the Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Canastota Public Library will host a presentation by local railroad historian John Taibi entitled \u201cThe People who worked the Railroad.\u201d Emphasis will be about notable railroaders of Madison County. \u00a0 Taibi is the author of over 20 publications dealing with central New York railroads. \u00a0The talk is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12, beginning each day at 1 p.m. you can learn the art of Tangles from instructor and former Canastotan Suzi Guifre DaVia.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an amazing art form that anyone can do&#8211;no skills required!<\/p>\n<p>DaVia says, \u201cThe\u00a0best part is that it&#8217;s such a freeing, relaxing, healing art form. It&#8217;s actually a form of meditation\/yoga, only you use paper and pen.\u201d\u00a0 Classes will last about 2 \u2013 2.5 hours each day.\u00a0 The cost is $10 per person for supplies to create your Tangles.\u00a0 Space is limited so participants must register and pay their fee in advance (by April 5, please).<\/p>\n<p>If you \u201cgeek\u201d local authors, the library has two visiting us in April.\u00a0 Anne T. Phinney will be at the library on Monday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lawson Community Room to talk about her book, \u201cFinding My Way to Moose River Farm.\u201d\u00a0 Phinney is an elementary school teacher at the Town of Webb School in Old Forge.\u00a0 She will talk about her book and her journeys in self-publishing.\u00a0 Phinney and her husband, Rod own Moose River Farm \u2013 home to the pair and their 11 horses, four dogs, three goats, two donkeys, an iguana and pot belly pig!\u00a0 \u201cFinding My Way to Moose River\u201d is Phinney\u2019s first book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReturn to Allen Park\u201d is local resident, Hank Leo, Jr\u2019s newest book.\u00a0 Leo will be on hand at the Canastota Public Library on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. to talk about this book.\u00a0 His third publication &#8220;Return to Allen Park,&#8221; continues Leos&#8217; real life experiences growing up in Oneida.\u00a0 &#8220;Return to Allen Park&#8221; expands on Leo&#8217;s personal stories and humor from his first book, \u201cHome When the Streetlights Come On.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo is the CEO of the TriValley YMCA overseeing branches in Rome, New Hartford, and Oneida.\u00a0 He serves on several local boards of directors including the Oneida City School District Board. His other books include \u201cHome When the Streetlights Come On,\u201d \u201cIn Your Hands,\u201d and \u201cGod Called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Music \u201cgeeks\u201d won\u2019t want to miss the concert at the library on Saturday, April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m.\u00a0 We will welcome back The Bear Cat Jass Band.\u00a0 You will definitely be tapping your toes as the Bear Cat Jass band plays their mix of classic traditional Jazz and Swing.\u00a0 The Bear Cat Jass band has been in existence for more than 55 years under the direction of Dick Ames.\u00a0 They are our most requested concert of the year!<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, April 29 at 1 p.m. our Book Chat will talk about the book, \u201cThe Invention of Hugo Cabret,\u201d by Brian Selznick. \u00a0A combination picture book, novel and movie, the book&#8217;s primary inspiration is the true story of turn-of-the-century French pioneer filmmaker\u00a0Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s, his surviving films and his collection of mechanical, wind-up figures called\u00a0Automata.\u00a0 We hope you will stop in and join the Book Chat discussion.\u00a0 The group meets in the Carnegie Room on the library\u2019s second floor.\u00a0 It is accessible by the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in learning about other programs at the library, please refer to our website at<a href=\"http:\/\/ www.canastotalibrary.org\" target=\"_blank\"> www.canastotalibrary.org<\/a> or call us at 697-7030.\u00a0 Our website features our weekly programming as well as special monthly programs.<\/p>\n<p>The library is located at 102 W.
