{"id":56906,"date":"2014-07-18T09:00:57","date_gmt":"2014-07-18T13:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=56906"},"modified":"2014-07-17T20:24:48","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T00:24:48","slug":"six-mustangs-collect-usa-football-division-iii-preseason-all-america-honors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=56906","title":{"rendered":"Six Mustangs collect USA Football Division III Preseason All-America honors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Brandy Thurston, Director of Sports Information<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Morrisville, NY \u2013 July 2014) USA Football announced its 2014 Division III Preseason All-America teams recently, naming six Morrisville State Mustangs to its second, third and honorable mention teams.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors\u00a0Lemar Johnson (Ossining, N.Y.\/Ossining HS)\u00a0and\u00a0Josh Powell (Yonkers, N.Y. \/ Archbishop Stepinac HS)each earned second team recognition, while junior\u00a0Cristian Pe\u00f1a (Ridgewood, N.Y. \/ Enterprise HS)\u00a0was recognized with third team honors.<\/p>\n<p>Senior\u2019s\u00a0Adrian Cabrera (New York, N.Y. \/ George Washington HS),\u00a0Ryan Mogensen (Westernville, N.Y. \/ Holland Patent HS)\u00a0along with junior\u00a0Anthony Gray (Smallwood, N.Y. \/ Monticello HS)\u00a0were named to the honorable mention team.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the above named recipients reside on the offensive side of the ball for the Mustangs,\u00a0Johnson\u00a0under center at quarterback,\u00a0Powell\u00a0and\u00a0Gray\u00a0as wide receivers,\u00a0Pe\u00f1a\u00a0in the backfield at running back, and\u00a0Cabrera\u00a0and\u00a0Mogensen\u00a0on the offensive line.<\/p>\n<p>Together the offensive unit exploded in the 2013 season, rising to the top of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) leaderboard in six different categories, including first downs offense (286), passing offense (284.8 ypg), rushing offense (222.6 ypg), scoring (32.4 ppg), passing efficiency (133.93), and total offense (507.4 ypg).The Mustangs offense became one of the top ranked offenses in the NJAC and gained national recognition as they finished the season with several top national rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Morrisville State for the first time in the history of the program, finished the season ranked seventh among all of Division III in total offense, and was ranked 13th\u00a0overall in first downs, 23rd\u00a0in passing and 38th\u00a0in rushing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the players that garnered pre-season All-American status are very well deserving of the recognition,\u201d said Morrisville State head coach Curt Fitzpatrick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLemar, Josh, Cristian, Anthony, Adrian, and Ryan are the backbone of our offensive unit and leaders on our team,\u201d he continued.\u00a0\u201cHowever, pre-season accolades are only worth something if you prove your worth during the season.\u00a0 I am confident that these awards, while a great honor, will only drive us to play better this season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/JohnsonL13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-56907\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/JohnsonL13.jpg\" alt=\"JohnsonL13\" width=\"225\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/JohnsonL13.jpg 225w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/JohnsonL13-188x300.jpg 188w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/JohnsonL13-94x150.jpg 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Johnson earned the starting job last August and threw 212 completions for 2,510 yards and 23 touchdowns; adding 639 yards on the ground to go along with nine more scores. His efforts landed him NJAC first team all-conference recognition, and NJAC Offensive Player of the Year accolades come season end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PowellJ13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-56908\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PowellJ13.jpg\" alt=\"PowellJ13\" width=\"225\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a>Powell appeared in all 10 games for the Mustangs, posting a 983 yard, 11 touchdown season behind 74 receptions, also earning first team All-Conference honors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PenaC13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-56909\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PenaC13.jpg\" alt=\"PenaC13\" width=\"225\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PenaC13.jpg 225w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PenaC13-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/PenaC13-96x150.jpg 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Pe\u00f1a wrapped up a stellar sophomore campaign with 1,347 yards rushing on 241 carries, with nine touchdown scores in 10 games for Morrisville State.
