{"id":56915,"date":"2014-07-18T08:00:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-18T12:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=56915"},"modified":"2014-07-17T20:34:09","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T00:34:09","slug":"illegal-dumping-if-you-see-it-say-something","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=56915","title":{"rendered":"Illegal Dumping: If You See It, Say Something"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dumping-Firetower-road.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-56916\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dumping-Firetower-road.jpg\" alt=\"Dumping Firetower road\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dumping-Firetower-road.jpg 400w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dumping-Firetower-road-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dumping-Firetower-road-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/em><em>Solid Waste Director James Zecca points out an illegal dump site on Firetower Road in Georgetown.<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By Mary Bartlett, Recycling Coordinator<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Madison County, NY \u2013 July 2014) We have been enjoying the blooming of the flowers of spring and summer along the roadsides in Madison County.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the onset of good weather also brings out unwanted trash and even illegal dumping.\u00a0 There have been at least two illegal dumps reported by observant citizens in the past two months to Madison County officials; one on Firetower Road in Georgetown and one on Canal Road in Canastota.<\/p>\n<p>By reporting illegal dumping, citizens help the landfill staff protect the environment from contamination and leaching of toxic chemicals in streams, not to mention the unsightly litter problem this dumping causes.\u00a0 Wildlife is endangered when animals consume or become entangled in the garbage.\u00a0 Trash can clog streams and ponds causing erosion and other water flow problems.\u00a0 These are all excellent reasons to report dumping and help us keep Madison County safe.<\/p>\n<p>Following up on an incident report, Solid Waste Director James Zecca and Recycling Coordinator Sharon Driscoll were dismayed to find not only one site, but a continuous line of trash all along the roadside and in the woods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spotted the one site, and I was taking pictures,\u201d Driscoll said. \u201cThen as we looked further up the road, we realized trash bags were dumped all along and further into the ditch and wooded area.\u00a0 The site spanned at least one mile down Firetower Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When an illegal dump site is reported, Madison County Enforcement Officer, Geoff Zimmer visits the site, takes pictures and reports back to Zecca.\u00a0 The officer investigates and when evidence indicates, can ticket violators for illegal dumping.\u00a0 In Madison County, fines can reach up to $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting the environment is a job for all Madison County residents.\u00a0 Illegal dumping\u2026.
