{"id":59799,"date":"2014-12-29T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2014-12-29T15:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=59799"},"modified":"2014-12-27T13:00:13","modified_gmt":"2014-12-27T18:00:13","slug":"borrow-a-librarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=59799","title":{"rendered":"Borrow a Librarian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>January Events scheduled at the Canastota Library<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Beth-Totten-new.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-55289\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Beth-Totten-new.jpg\" alt=\"Beth Totten new\" width=\"403\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Beth-Totten-new.jpg 403w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Beth-Totten-new-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Beth-Totten-new-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Beth-Totten-new-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a>By Beth Totten, public relations specialist<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Canastota, NY \u2013 Dec. 2014) Have you made any resolutions for the New Year?\u00a0 Have you always wanted to be more creative?\u00a0 Have you decided to learn about local history or genealogy?\u00a0 If so, you will want to stop at the library for some great resources.<\/p>\n<p>At the library, we\u2019ve made it possible for you to \u201cborrow\u201d a librarian when you need help with research, new technologies and more.\u00a0 We are fortunate to have retired librarian Chris Darby as a resource.\u00a0 Chris is available for one on one work with patrons researching family genealogy and also in helping patrons who might be re-entering the workforce.\u00a0 Those returning to work might find that they need help with resume writing, beginning to Intermediate Microsoft Word, Access and Excel.\u00a0 Chris can also assist patrons how need to set up an email account or who need help learning to attach resumes to an email.\u00a0 To \u201cBorrow a Librarian,\u201d a patron may call and schedule an appointment or just stop in.\u00a0 Chris is available to work with patrons on the following days and times:\u00a0 Tuesdays, 10am \u2013 2pm; Wednesdays, 6pm- 8pm and Thursdays, 10am-2pm.<\/p>\n<p>The Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest is back!\u00a0 The library is now accepting poetry and short stories for this contest.\u00a0 Entries will be received until March 31 at the close of business.\u00a0 This contest, organized by Joan and Doug Eddy, is a memorial to their daughter, Rebecca.\u00a0 Ms. Eddy was a graduate of Canastota High School and John Hopkins University.\u00a0 The contest is to encourage creative works in writing for all ages.\u00a0 Entry forms are available at the Circulation Desk.\u00a0 Entry requirements indicate that one entry of a poem or short story (500 \u2013 5,000 words) may be submitted. There are four age categories for submission and entries of those age categories will be judged in both poetry and short stories.\u00a0 The age categories include:\u00a0 Age 10 and under, 11 \u2013 14 years old; 15 \u2013 18 years old and over 18 years old.\u00a0 Entries may be in any style, genre or subject and the contest is free to enter.\u00a0 There are no residential requirements. An awards ceremony will be held in April.<\/p>\n<p>If learning about local history is your goal, the Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Canastota Library have again teamed up to sponsor the ninth year of the Canalside Talks at the library.\u00a0 Leading off the series on Monday, January 26 at 7pm will be \u201cIce Cream\u201d with Rick Stevens of Zems Ice Cream and Joe DiGiorgio of Canal Town Museum.\u00a0 The duo will talk about the history of ice cream making, local businesses of the past and the business of ZEMS.\u00a0 The presentation will end with an ice cream social.\u00a0 This talk is free and the public is encouraged to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The Book Chat group invites you to join them in 2015 for a year of interesting reads. On Tuesday Jan. 27 at 1pm, the group will be discussing \u201cUnbroken\u201d by Lara Hillenbrand. \u201cUnbroken\u201d is a World War II story of survival, resilience and redemption.\u00a0 In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. Read about Zmperini\u2019s struggles in this book.\u00a0 Then, join our Book Chat to discuss it!<\/p>\n<p>Our newsletter indicates that Loreen Collin\u2019s work will be on display in our Lawson Community Room.\u00a0 Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to reschedule Loreen Collins to display her work in December of 2015.\u00a0 We apologize for any inconvenience.\u00a0 There will be no art display in January.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, if you want to try your hand at learning to knit you will want to consider joining one of our knitting groups.\u00a0 Join either our Thursday Evening Group which meets at 6pm each Thursday or our Morning Group which meets each Friday at 10am.\u00a0 We currently have about 30 members who meet in the morning and 15 who attend evening group meetings.\u00a0 Both groups meet in the Lawson Room.\u00a0 Members knit, crochet and there are even some loom workers in the groups.<\/p>\n<p>The library is here to help you make a great start with all of your resolutions for 2014.\u00a0 All of these programs are offered through the library at no charge to participants.\u00a0 Don\u2019t have a library card?\u00a0 They are free\u2026stop in and see us today.<\/p>\n<p>The library is located at 102 W.
