{"id":60430,"date":"2015-02-13T10:00:13","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=60430"},"modified":"2015-02-12T19:59:39","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T00:59:39","slug":"the-opl-offers-students-a-break-from-winter-break","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=60430","title":{"rendered":"The OPL Offers Students a Break from Winter Break"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Library-books.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-46728\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Library-books.jpg\" alt=\"Library books\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Library-books.jpg 230w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Library-books-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a>(Oneida, NY \u2013 Feb. 2015) Elementary- and middle-school students on Winter Break can come in out of the cold to Oneida Public Library\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0and\u00a0Thursday\u00a0afternoons\u00a0Feb. 17 and 19 for two programs calculated to divert and entertain them.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Feb. 17 at\u00a02:30 p.m., OPL\u2019s Mad Professor Jen Herzog comes to the library from\u00a0Herkimer County Community College\u00a0to lead a special science program dubbed \u201cAnimal Attraction.\u201d While humans may send Valentine cards and give presents to each other to express their love, Herzog will introduce how animals communicate their desires and explain how and why some signs work best.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Feb. 19 at\u00a01 p.m., OPL\u2019s Winter Break Movie Matinee will show on the wide screen the 2014 Disney comedy, \u201cAlexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,\u201d which has just been released in DVD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlexander\u201d is based on the picture book of the same title by Judith Viorst.\u00a0It chronicles young Alexander\u2019s worst day \u201cever.\u201d\u00a0He suffers with gum in his hair, sitting in the middle of the backseat, third-best-friend status, no dessert at lunch, lima beans, railroad pajamas and similar heartbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>In the film comedy, the Disney Studio opens up the story so that everyone in Alexander\u2019s eccentric family has a horrible bad day. The film stars Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner and was directed by Miguel Artita.<\/p>\n<p>Both programs are free. For more information, stop by the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., or call 363-3050.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPL closes for Presidents\u2019 Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oneida Public Library will be closed\u00a0Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of Washington\u2019s Birthday and Presidents\u2019 Day. The library will be open as usual onTuesday, Feb. 17, from\u00a09 a.m. to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPL\u2019s \u2018Poetry Hour\u2019\u00a0Feb. 17 focuses on Longfellow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The American poetry discussion group at Oneida Public Library meets this month on\u00a0Tuesday Feb. 17 at\u00a07 p.m.\u00a0for a \u201cPoetry Hour\u201d focused on selected poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow plus his bestselling epic poem \u201cThe Song of Hiawatha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discussion leader, OPL Assistant Director Tom Murray, will provide copies of the selected lyrics by Longfellow, but interested participants are asked to bring their own copies of \u201cHiawatha\u201d for reference.<\/p>\n<p>The program is free and open to all.
