\"GSC<\/a>(Town of Lenox, NY \u2013 March 2015) The public is invited to the Great Swamp Conservancy of Canastota on March 14 at 1 pm to a very special free Bluebird program, designed for all ages.<\/p>\n

March is National Bluebird Month: the Eastern Bluebird is the official NY State bird. \u00a0Come celebrate this little, vibrant, bright blue bird\u2019s return to New York with nationally known bluebird expert, John Rogers.<\/p>\n

Rogers has maintained a trail of bluebird nest boxes in central New York for decades, and has fledged over 12,700 Eastern Bluebirds. He is a recognized authority on bluebird conservation, and has done slide programs and workshops for hundreds of groups in 11 states and 2 Canadian provinces. He received his BA in Biology at SUNY Oswego and was a co founder of the New York State Bluebird Society in 1982.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll About Bluebirds\u201d is a highly acclaimed nature program that is educational, creative and fun. The focus is on bluebirds, including the nesting cycle (building nests, egg laying, raising young, etc.) and the proper use of nest boxes. However there is more. Rogers opens young and older hearts and minds to other birds, butterflies, wildflowers, and nature appreciation and exploration .His Power Point program includes visually stunning photographs, creative animations, bird sounds and is especially interactive with children who are encouraged to share their nature experiences.<\/p>\n

Along with the slide program you can choose to build your own bluebird nest box with all the tools and materials provided at a reasonable cost.\u00a0 Participants must register for the program. Donations will be gladly accepted. Those building nesting boxes must sign up so Mr. Rogers can bring enough materials and tools. Please call the GSC at 697-2950.\u00a0 Cost $10 per nest box.<\/p>\n

Like robins and cardinals not all bluebirds migrate south for the winter. There have been numerous sightings of these birds on Warner\u2019s and Pine Ridge roads and in the Lakeport area this winter. If you see some in your area they are very fond of meal worms and once you can get them to come to your feeding stations they will return often, looking for these favorite morsels. The live worms can be purchased at bait shops and dead ones can be found in big box stores in the pet food departments. Lay a few in a shallow saucer to draw them to your yard. Once they return you can mix the two kinds and they will accept what is in the dish.<\/p>\n
