{"id":60858,"date":"2015-03-15T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2015-03-15T13:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=60858"},"modified":"2015-03-14T12:04:14","modified_gmt":"2015-03-14T16:04:14","slug":"payne-selected-as-ftc-deans-list-finalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=60858","title":{"rendered":"Payne Selected as FTC Dean\u2019s List Finalist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RPAYNE-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-60859\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RPAYNE-1.jpg\" alt=\"RPAYNE 1\" width=\"226\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RPAYNE-1.jpg 226w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RPAYNE-1-139x150.jpg 139w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>(New Hartford, NY \u2013 March 2015) New Hartford High School Junior,\u00a0Ryan Payne\u00a0was selected as one of two FIRST\u00a0Tech Challenge (FTC) 2015 Dean\u2019s List Finalists representing the Empire New York Region.<\/p>\n<p>The Empire New York FTC region covers 66 counties from Buffalo to Yonkers with nearly 100 teams.<\/p>\n<p>FIRST, an acronym for &#8220;For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology&#8221; offers FIRST Tech Challenge as part of a series of robotics programs for students age 6 through 18.\u00a0 In an effort to recognize the leadership and dedication of\u00a0FIRST\u2019s\u00a0most outstanding secondary school students, the Kamen family, led by inventor and\u00a0FIRST\u00a0founder Dean Kamen, sponsors the\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Dean&#8217;s List awards for selected 10th\u00a0or 11th\u00a0grade student participants in\u00a0FIRSTTech Challenge and\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Robotics Competition.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Award, there are three levels of\u00a0FIRSTDean\u2019s List Award students. Students are nominated by their teams as Semi-Finalists at Qualifying Tournaments, Finalists are selected at Regional Championships, and 10 winners from FTC are selected for the FIRST\u00a0Championship in St. Louis, Mo. April 22 to 25.<\/p>\n<p>Winners receive a trophy, written recommendation colleges, credit towards next season\u2019s registration fee, a commemorative plaque, and an invitation to attend an expense paid\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Dean\u2019s List Award Summit at FIRST\u00a0headquarters in Manchester, NH.<\/p>\n<p>The students who earn\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Dean\u2019s List status at all levels are examples of current student leaders who have led their teams and communities to increased awareness for\u00a0FIRST\u00a0and its mission while achieving personal technical expertise and accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>Since its introduction in 2010, the FIRST\u00a0Dean\u2019s List Award has attracted the attention of prestigious colleges and universities who desire to have\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Dean\u2019s List students apply for admissions.<\/p>\n<p>Criteria for selection of\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Dean\u2019s List Award includes a student\u2019s demonstrated leadership and commitment to the ideals of\u00a0FIRST, effectiveness at increasing\u00a0FIRST\u00a0awareness, interest in and passion for a long-term commitment to FIRST, overall individual contribution to their team, technical expertise and passion, entrepreneurship and creativity, and ability to motivate and lead fellow team members.<\/p>\n<p>Payne logged more than 700 hours of community outreach in five seasons with FIRST Tech Challenge, mentoring, volunteering and demonstrating robots.<\/p>\n<p>Recent RoboSpartan team projects include hosting the Central New York FTC Qualifying Tournament at SUNY Poly, the annual CNY Kick-Off Chassis Quick Build and monthly scrimmages, and reaching out to Upstate Cerebral Palsy to help establish both FIRST LEGO League and FIRST The Challenge teams. The team also hosts a growing FTC TEC Network, a Google Community promoting peer learning with 100 teams from 27 States and 7 Countries.<\/p>\n<p>Payne joined\u00a0FIRST\u00a0in 2007, initially on a school-based team, and later helping his parents form an independent team, the RoboSpartans.\u00a0 His team went on to a North American Championship their first season and the World Championship as a Regional Champion and Core Values Ambassador Team.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, the RoboSpartans joined\u00a0FIRST\u00a0Tech Challenge, an affordable, highly competitive high-school level robotics program with more than 3,800 teams worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2013 FTC World Championship, Payne and his team received recognition as fourth\u00a0place finalists for the prestigious Inspire Award as well as fifth\u00a0place for the Connect and Think Awards.<\/p>\n<p>This season, the RoboSpartans won Inspire Award and Winning Alliance Captain trophies at the Northern York FTC Championship at Clarkson University.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the team won a second Inspire Award at the Capital Region FTC Qualifier in Albany.\u00a0 In both tournaments, the team\u2019s robot was undefeated in qualifying matches while the team was noted as a stellar example of an inspirational FIRST Tech Challenge team on and off the field.<\/p>\n<p>Payne and fellow team members from New Hartford, Whitesboro and Utica are heading to the East Super Regional Championship at the University of Scranton,\u00a0March 19 to 21\u00a0with their sights set on inclusion in this year\u2019s World Championship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(New Hartford, NY \u2013 March 2015) New Hartford High School Junior,\u00a0Ryan Payne\u00a0was selected as one of two FIRST\u00a0Tech Challenge (FTC) 2015 Dean\u2019s List Finalists representing the Empire New York Region.
