\"James<\/a>(Cazenovia, NY \u2013 April 2015) Local resident James Pirkl, professor emeritus and past chairman of Syracuse University\u2019s department of design, will present a two-part transgenerational housing series at the Cazenovia Public Library in April\u2014\u201cThe Housing Challenge: Maintaining Independence\u201d on April 16\u00a0and \u201cThe Transgenerational House: Answering the Challenge\u201d on April 30.<\/p>\n

Join Pirkl in the Library Community Room on Thursday, April 16\u00a0at 7 p.m. as he discusses the challenge of maintaining and extending each person\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n

Since each generation differs widely from its processor, the present generation becomes better educated, more culturally literate, and enjoys a longer life with better health and an active life style.<\/p>\n

But because the aging process starts at birth and ends with death, an extremely diverse group of individuals exists, all with wide differences that defy characterization as no two are alike.\u00a0 While each follows a similar path, all arrive at a particular point, at different ages, with different bodily changes.<\/p>\n

As physical and sensory capabilities decline, individuals seek an accommodating environment that will help them maintain an active lifestyle in a home that \u201caccommodates\u201d rather than \u201cdiscriminates\u201d and \u201csympathizes\u201d rather than \u201cstigmatizes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transgenerational housing answers the challenge of maintaining and extending each person\u2019s independence by removing barriers, providing wider options, and enhancing the quality of life regardless of a person\u2019s age or ability.<\/p>\n

Pirkl is an internationally respected design educator, writer, and lecturer and is described as a \u201ckey figure in universal design\u201d by the Smithsonian\u2019s Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum.\u00a0 As a former Senior Research Fellow at Syracuse University\u2019s All-University Gerontology Center, he co-authored the groundbreaking resource manual\u00a0Guidelines and Strategies for Designing Transgenerational Products,\u00a0authored the influential book\u00a0Transgenerational Design: Products for an Aging Population,\u00a0and as an authoritative design consultant for the 50+ market, he has had numerous articles published in influential magazines.<\/p>\n

Nursery rhymes take center stage in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room with \u201cMother Goose Tea: Food and Fun for the Whole Family\u201d on Saturday April\u00a018 from\u00a011:00 A.M. to noon.<\/p>\n

Preschoolers and their families are invited to join in the fun while celebrating Mother Goose.\u00a0 Crafts, activities, books, and delicious foods\u2014all inspired by nursery rhymes\u2014will be part of the fun.<\/p>\n

This program, co-sponsored by the Cazenovia Public Library and the Cazenovia Children\u2019s House, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
