{"id":61328,"date":"2015-04-17T14:00:46","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=61328"},"modified":"2015-04-14T18:37:06","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T22:37:06","slug":"ukraine-conflict-in-the-spotlight-as-cazenovia-forum-hosts-top-foreign-affairs-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=61328","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine Conflict in the Spotlight as Cazenovia Forum Hosts Top Foreign Affairs Expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Karatnycky.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-61329\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Karatnycky.jpg\" alt=\"Karatnycky\" width=\"226\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Karatnycky.jpg 226w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Karatnycky-125x150.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>(Cazenovia, NY \u2013 April 2015) The conflict in Ukraine will be the focus of the next Cazenovia Forum lecture and discussion, as one of America&#8217;s leading experts on the region presents an in-depth look at the Ukrainian government&#8217;s struggle with pro-Russian separatists and their backers in Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation by Adrian Karatnycky, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the U.S., will take place on\u00a0Friday May 1 at\u00a07 p.m.\u00a0in the Morgan Room of\u00a0Hubbard Hall at Cazenovia College. \u00a0Please\u00a0note this is a change from our usual venue. \u00a0The event is free of charge and will\u00a0be followed by a reception, at which audience members will have an opportunity to further engage the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The topic of Karatnycky&#8217;s presentation will be\u00a0&#8220;The Conflict in Ukraine: Civil War or Russian Aggression?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The crisis in Ukraine began with anti-government demonstrations in November 2013 when pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych&#8217;s government abandoned a deal with the European Union in favor of stronger ties with Russia. \u00a0The street protests led to Yanukovich&#8217;s resignation and the formation of a new government, following which Russia invaded and annexed the Crimean Peninsula, a move largely condemned by the international community. \u00a0Since then, and despite a recent ceasefire agreement, fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Moscow-supported separatists has continued in the eastern part of the country, with more than 6,000 people dead and more than 1.5 million displaced.<\/p>\n<p>The co-author and editor of more than 20 books on East European and human rights topics,\u00a0Karatnycky is widely regarded as one of the nation&#8217;s top analysts on the situation in Ukraine. \u00a0His writings regularly appear\u00a0in\u00a0Foreign Affairs\u00a0magazine,\u00a0The Wall Street Journal,\u00a0Washington Post,\u00a0New York Times\u00a0and other periodicals.
