State Fair to Host Lakes of NY: 21st Century Water Technologies Exhibit<\/p>\n

(Syracuse, NY \u2013 Aug. 2015) New York Sea Grant, the Great New York State Fair, and Great Lakes Research Consortium are partnering to bring the new Lakes of NY: Over, Under, Around and Through, 21st Century Technologies Exhibit to the 2015 Great New York State Fair through Sept. 7.<\/p>\n

\u2018We were pleased to share the exciting Great Shipwrecks exhibit in 2014, so much so that we invited New York Sea Grant to bring a new New York waters exhibit to the 2015 Fair,\u2019 said Great New York State Fair Acting Director Troy Waffner.<\/p>\n

The exhibit features high tech components on land and in the reflecting pool at the Mini NY State Park at the Fair:<\/p>\n

*New York Sea Grant 2015 Discover Clean and Safe Boating educational vessel equipped with a propane engine; presented in partnership with US Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Power Squadron
\n*Sea Perch ROVs used for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education
\n*Great Lakes Research Consortium and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry with daily, in-water demonstrations of ROVs, remotely operated vehicles, transmitting to datascreen in exhibit tent
\n*Weather sensing buoy in State Fair pool transmitting to website managed by Great Lakes Research Consortium and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at www.esf.edu\/shipwreck\u00a0<\/a>with real time data also seen on 36-inch monitor in exhibit tent *information on the scientific aquatic research drone being utilized by Buffalo State University for Great Lakes region research
\n*national Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers Clean, Drain, Dry program in exhibit tent
\n* picture yourself as an Historic Underwater Diver photo cutout from H. Lee White Maritime Museum, Oswego, NY, and
\n*Coastie, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary talking tugboat mascot in the daily Great NY State Fair parade and at selected times at the Lakes of NY exhibit.<\/p>\n

The Lakes of NY: 21st Century Technologies Exhibit is located opposite the Horticulture Building at the end of the reflecting pool in the Mini NYS State Park at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse.<\/p>\n

The Great Shipwrecks of NY: Great Lakes Signature Exhibit from the 2014 Great NY State Fair is now traveling to venues across New York State and in the Northeast.<\/p>\n

Area Schools Participating in ROV Demo Days at Great NY State Fair<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"4062ROVPrep723.25\"<\/a>New York Sea Grant, the Great New York State Fair, and the Great Lakes Research Consortium have announced the schedule of in-water ROV Demo Days presented by four area school districts and SUNY Oswego at the 2015 Great New York State Fair.<\/p>\n

The\u00a010 a.m. to 4 p.m. demonstrations are part of The Lakes of NY Over, Under, Around and Through, 21st Century Technologies Exhibits coordinated by New York Sea Grant with components on land and in the reflecting pool at the mini New York State Park at the Fairgrounds in Syracuse.<\/p>\n

Middle and high school and college students have built remotely operated underwater vehicles, ROVs, to demonstrate in the reflecting pool as follows:
\n*Monday, August 31: Vernon, Verona, Sherrill Central School
\n*Tuesday, September 1: Chittenango Central School
\n*Wednesday, September 2: Cicero North Syracuse Central School
\n*Friday, September 4: Central Square Central School
\n*Saturday, September 5: State University of New York at Oswego.<\/p>\n

The students are using Sea Perch ROV kits developed with the Office of Naval Research which coordinates the science and technology programs of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics educators and robotics classes nationwide use the kits as educational tools.<\/p>\n

The students participating at the Great New York State Fair will maneuver the ROVs through an obstacle course in the reflecting pool with images transmitted to a large video screen in the exhibit tent.<\/p>\n

These ROV Demo Days with the students provide Fair visitors a closeup look at technology and its practical application for understanding the unique water resources of New York State, said New York Sea Grant Coastal Recreation and Tourism Specialist Dave White, associate director of the Great Lakes Research Consortium, and coordinator of The Lakes of NY exhibit.<\/p>\n

Other components of the exhibit include the 2015 Discover Clean and Safe Boating education vessel equipped with a propane engine, a Great Lakes Research Consortium weather sensing buoy, and information on aerial drones being used by Buffalo State University for aquatic invasive species research in Western NY.<\/p>\n
