After many years of investigating into their great-great-grandfather\u2019s life through historic\u00a0documents and his own diaries, Barbara\u2019s family pieced together the story of Joseph Hoover who\u00a0enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War in 1862. He served until his capture in 1864 when he\u00a0was imprisoned in the notorious camp at Andersonville. Later, he was transferred to another camp in\u00a0South Carolina where he and a friend escaped. They made it back to the Union lines aided by slaves\u00a0and what is now known as the Underground Railroad. His diaries are considered important primary\u00a0evidence that slaves helped Union soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>More than a century later, Joseph Hoover\u2019s story caught the attention of an independent film\u00a0company which produced the movie, \u201cUnion Bound\u201d based on his diaries. The film\u2019s tag line reads\u00a0\u201cHe went to war to free the slaves but was freed by them.\u201d A private screening of \u201cUnion Bound\u201d and\u00a0a reception were recently held in the Community Room at LutheranCare for Barbara Crane, her\u00a0family and friends.
