The Art Park has teamed up with Cazenovia School District, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry’s Department of Landscape Architecture, Next Generation Maple Products, and Critz Farms to tap and collect sap from the Art Park’s maple forest (the “Sugar Bush”).

The Art of Maple Syrup Production program began in the fall of 2015 when students in the agricultural science classes at Cazenovia High School visited the Art Park to identify, map, and measure the maple trees on the Art Park’s property. Next Generation Maple Products donated taps and buckets and Critz Farms has been purchasing the excess sap the students collect. The program serves about 40 Cazenovia students and has grown to include 14 SUNY ESF landscape architecture students enrolled in Professor Matt Potteiger’s Food Studio.

High school students will host a public boiling demonstration Saturday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. SUNY ESF students will offer a Slow Art/Slow Food event Saturday, April 9, and will feature maple syrup and wild leeks (ramps). Both events will take place at the Art Park and will include tours of the Sugar Bush.

“This program is a wonderful opportunity to welcome students, members of the community, and local business owners to utilize the facilities of the Art Park,” said Stone Quarry Hill Art Park Executive Director Emily Zaengle. “We hope to grow this program each year. It’s a natural fit. We’re surrounded by a landscape of maple trees and maple syrup production. The goal of the program is about creating a hands-on experience for the agricultural science students.

“Thanks to our partners, we were able to get it off the ground this year. As the program grows, we will also involve our artists-in-residence. Imagine sap lines as sculpture, the drips of running sap as music, or a sugar shack as architecture. This is what art in nature is all about.”

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, with 104 acres of conserved land and more than four miles of trails, overlooks the breathtaking rural landscape of Cazenovia and Madison County, New York. Inspired by the relationship between art and nature, the Art Park is dedicated to providing a unique environment for the showcasing of art by emerging and established artists in natural and gallery settings. Its mission is to educate and engage the public through exhibitions, collections, interpretation, and community outreach programs in the arts.

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park is open from dawn to dusk and encourages the public use of its trails 365 days a year.
