(Wampsville) The New York State Sheriffs\u2019 Association Institute will begin its annual Honorary\u00a0Membership drive in Madison County within the next few days according to Sheriff Allen Riley.<\/p>\n

The New York State Sheriffs\u2019 Association Institute was established in\u00a01979. It is a not-for-profit corporation, tax exempt organization, and\u00a0contributions to the Institute are tax deductible.<\/p>\n

While the Sheriff\u2019s Office is a unit of county government, many of the\u00a0concerns of Sheriffs and other law enforcement agencies are best\u00a0addressed on a statewide level. The Sheriffs\u2019 Institute provides\u00a0centralized training programs and services for all Sheriffs\u2019 Offices,\u00a0where those programs and services would be unavailable or impractical on a single county basis. The flagship program of the Sheriffs\u2019 Institute is the Sheriffs\u2019 Summer Camp for economically challenged\u00a0children. The Sheriffs\u2019 Camp, in its 40th year of operation, is located on Keuka Lake and 840 children from\u00a0across New York State attend each summer. The Sheriffs\u2019 Institute pays the entire cost of the camp stay and\u00a0transportation. Most children attending wouldn\u2019t otherwise have an opportunity for vacation travel or a\u00a0summer camp experience.<\/p>\n

The Sheriffs\u2019 Camp program combines summer recreation with activities designed to teach an understanding\u00a0of, and respect for, our laws and the men and women who enforce them. The strong camper to counselor\u00a0ratio allows for individual attention with an emphasis on the development of self-esteem.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a\u00a0summer camp experience or a summer vacation,\u201d Riley said. \u201cBy becoming an honorary member you\u00a0are supporting the Sheriffs\u2019 Summer Camp for economically disadvantaged children. Over the past five\u00a0years, we have been able to send 55 Madison County kids to summer camp through the generous donations\u00a0that are made during this membership drive.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, the Sheriffs\u2019 Institute operates a scholarship program that provides one scholarship to each of\u00a0New York State\u2019s Community College\u2019s Criminal Justice Programs. This program is designed to help attract\u00a0the best and the brightest to the criminal justice vocation.<\/p>\n
