Canastota Central School District officials announced today <!--more-->that the high school merits a Bronze Medal rating in the 2016 national rankings, based on U.S. News criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Public schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on factors including state assessments, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.<\/p>\n<p>In an assessment of Canastota High School on the magazine\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-high-schools\/new-york\/districts\/canastota-central-school-district\/canastota-high-school-13573\">\u201cEducation Rankings &amp; Advice\u201d<\/a> page, findings indicate that Canastota High School is a \u201cFringe Rural\u201d district that has an 81-percent graduation rate. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams, with an AP participation rate of 19 percent. There are 51 full-time teachers for 716 high school students (with a makeup of\u00a0 9 percent minority enrollment and 38 percent of students classified as economically disadvantaged).<\/p>\n<p>In English proficiency, 79 percent of students rank as meeting learning standards or better. In math proficiency, 84 percent of students rank as meeting learning standards or better.<\/p>\n<p>Canastota High School was ranked as having a 13.7 on the College Readiness Index, meriting the Bronze medal status. U.S. News calculated a College Readiness Index based on exam participation rates and percentages of students passing at least one exam. The index determined which types of medals (gold, silver or bronze) were awarded to top-performing schools. CRI values greater than 20.17 in a four-part evaluation of testing scores meet the criteria for Silver or Gold status.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is great news,&#8221; said Canastota Central School Superintendent June C.
