With\u00a0key approval secured, Harriet Tubman Residence\u00a0one\u00a0giant\u00a0step closer to becoming a\u00a0National\u00a0Historic Park;\u00a0<\/em>Schumer, Gillibrand say National Park would preserve the historic site of a woman\u00a0who was a beacon of freedom\u00a0and\u00a0played an integral role in our nation\u2019s history<\/em><\/p>\n

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced Attorney General Loretta Lynch signed on to the General Agreement\u00a0that will\u00a0allow the Harriet Tubman Residence in Auburn to become a National Park.\u00a0The Harriet Tubman Residence, a historic landmark in a region with a strong history of individuals rooted in social activism and justice.\u00a0An escaped slave herself, Tubman\u00a0used her home in Auburn to shelter her parents and many African Americans who escaped slavery\u00a0\u2013 some of whom she guided herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a great week for Harriet Tubman and those seeking to honor her life,” Schumer said. “First, she is named as the new face of the $20 bill, and today the Department of Justice approved the agreement that will establish her home in Cayuga as a National\u00a0Historic\u00a0Park. I pushed DOJ to prioritize this agreement so that NPS and locals can complete the land transfer. Today\u2019s action puts us one giant step closer to the promised land of duly honoring the woman they called \u2018Moses\u2019 with a National\u00a0Historic\u00a0Park.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Harriet Tubman Residence showcases the life of an icon and agent of social change who altered the face of our nation for future generations. This designation would be another national highlight of New York\u2019s rich history and would strengthen our commitment to preserving our landmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n
