\"SS<\/a>The public is invited to attend a free Open Studio Reception on Tuesday, May 24,\u00a0from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Sculpture Space studio, 12 Gates St., Utica. The reception\u00a0provides an opportunity for local residents and supporters of the organization to meet current\u00a0artists-in-residence, view their artwork in progress and learn more about their creative process.<\/p>\n

The restaurant sponsor is Mano a Bocca Catering, 408 Rutger St. The reception will feature current artists in residence Esperanza Cortes (New York City) and\u00a0Andrew Ranville (Flint, Mich.).<\/p>\n

Cortes is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist who creates installations that incorporate sculptures, drawings, prints, paintings and video. Her interest in the folk art\u00a0traditions, art rituals, music and dance of Latin America, The Caribbean and Africa and\u00a0their continuous and evolving changes are at the core of her sculpture, installations and\u00a0interventions.<\/p>\n

Ranville\u2019s practice is largely project-based with location, landscape and the artwork\u00a0itself determining the medium. His installations, sculptures, film, photographs, recordings and\u00a0prints investigate a variety of interests including architecture, environment, field science,\u00a0cartography and community.<\/p>\n

About Sculpture Space<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A cultural resource within Utica, the Mohawk Valley and Upstate New\u00a0York, Sculpture Space promotes interaction between international visiting artists and the local community\u00a0through installations in public spaces, studio tours and collaborations with other organizations to realize\u00a0artists’ projects. Eighteen national and international artists are accepted each year to enjoy two-month\u00a0residencies, receiving stipends to offset materials and travel costs, subsidized housing, 24-hour access to\u00a0the studio and technical assistance. The program is in part made possible with support from the New\u00a0York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts (which believes that a great nation\u00a0deserves great art), The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties Inc., area foundations,\u00a0corporations and generous friends.
