The American Red Cross and Stewart\u2019s Shops\u00a0announced today the successful completion of the \u201cGive a Pint, Get a Pint\u201d program. The\u00a0program provided donors from 19 Eastern New York counties who gave blood in June a\u00a0voucher for a free pint of Stewart\u2019s Shops ice cream or gelato. Thanks in part to \u201cGive a Pint,\u00a0Get a Pint\u201d, blood donations in the area exceeded the monthly expectation by 30 percent in\u00a0June: More than 6030 units of blood were donated, with all presenting donors receiving\u00a0vouchers for a free pint of Stewart\u2019s Shops ice cream or gelato.<\/p>\n

This effort comes at a time when the Red Cross is issuing an emergency call for donors to give\u00a0now to help address a significant blood shortage and ensure area patients receive the\u00a0transfusions they need.\u00a0Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in.<\/p>\n

Every two seconds in the United States blood and platelets are needed to respond to patient\u00a0emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients,\u00a0and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must\u00a0collect approximately 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day for the patients at about\u00a02,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. In the New-York Penn Region,\u00a0approximately 1000 blood and platelet donations are needed every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s usually challenging for us to collect enough blood to meet the needs of the hospitals we\u00a0serve during the summer months,\u201d said Red Cross Donor Recruitment Manager of NY-Penn\u00a0Region Blood Services Sonja Ronovech. \u201cWe thank Stewart\u2019s Shops for their support in helping\u00a0us get life-saving blood products for patients in our hospitals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so pleased with the response to our partnership with the Red Cross and the amazing\u00a0amount of blood that was collected,\u201d added Stewart\u2019s Shops President Gary Dake. \u201cWhile a pint\u00a0of Stewart\u2019s ice cream was a great incentive for June, donating blood is an important need all\u00a0year long and we encourage you to continue to give.\u201d<\/p>\n

The need for blood and platelets is constant, because blood products are perishable and\u00a0have a limited shelf life. Those who need blood include accident and burn victims, heart\u00a0surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia,\u00a0cancer or sickle cell disease. Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days and platelets\u00a0just five days.<\/p>\n

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds\u00a0and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.<\/p>\n

How to donate blood<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800- 733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood\u00a0types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver\u2019s license\u00a0or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age\u00a0(16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good\u00a0health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age\u00a0and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.<\/p>\n

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their\u00a0pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior\u00a0to arriving at the blood drive.
