\"Caz<\/a>Cazenovia College is pleased to announce the continuation of its Faculty Library Lecture Series: \u201cGreat Minds\/Great Ideas,\u201d on Tuesday, September 13<\/span>th<\/sup>, at 7:00 pm in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room. This popular series features noted Cazenovia College faculty members who \u201cdiscuss the lives and work of important thinkers who opened doors of opportunity for the human spirit\u201d (<\/span>www.cazenovia.edu\/greatminds<\/a>). In this upcoming installment, Assistant Professor and Program Director of Photography Sarah Cross will explore \u00a0\u201cPhotography, Memory, and Loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At times of loss, we turn to photographs. When we fear that our memory won\u2019t suffice, we rely upon the photographic image. Throughout its history, photography has been inextricably bound to death, due to its tangible link to what has been. The photograph has and continues to function in multiple ways: as a trace, as memorial, and as witness to what stood before the lens. As Susan Sontag puts it, \u201call photographs testify to time\u2019s relentless melt.\u201d This lecture will examine both the theoretical connection of photography to death and loss as seen in the writings of Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag, as well as the work of photographers who create art as a way to grieve.<\/p>\n

Sarah Cross joined the Cazenovia College faculty in 2013. She previously taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Photography & New Media at Beloit College in Wisconsin. She earned a BFA at the University of Buffalo and an MFA at Illinois State University. Her work has been shown nationally in both group and solo shows at galleries including the Catherine Edelman Gallery, Wakeley Galleries, Silver Eye Center for Photography, the Center for Fine Art Photography, and the Black Box Gallery.<\/p>\n
