\"County<\/a>Earlier this year Madison County Office of Emergency Management launched a volunteer fire & EMS recruitment effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother area that we are exploring is recruiting post-911 military Veterans to join the ranks of the volunteer fire departments and EMS Agencies,” said\u00a0OEM Director Ted Halpin. “We do have Veterans volunteering for fire departments and ambulance services presently. We believe there are more Veterans who want to continue to serve and to reconnect with the teamwork and camaraderie that they had during serving on active duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The connection between military vets and firefighters and EMTs is there,” said project coordinator Dave VanNamee. “Both groups respect each other for their service toward protecting the homeland.\u00a0 Recruiting Veterans to serve back home is a sound step to bolster diminishing volunteer ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The website https:\/\/soldierfirefighter.wordpress.com\/why-your-vfd-should-recruit-veterans\/<\/a>\u00a0has been developed to aid in this project. This website act as a service for people interested about becoming a volunteer firefighter or EMT.<\/p>\n

“There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to serve,” VanNamee said. “Volunteer agencies need interior firefighters, exterior firefighters, medical personnel, and fire\/police members. Not everyone is looking to do the interior firefighting job, but many people want to serve their community.\u201d<\/p>\n

To date, the OEM recruitment grant activities have focused on:<\/p>\n

1) meetings with the volunteer fire departments to discuss their existing recruitment and retention programs;<\/p>\n

2) benchmarking other recruitment and retention programs;<\/p>\n

3) surveying recruit firefighters as to their motivation to volunteer;<\/p>\n

4) scheduling programs in the high schools to present volunteering opportunities; and<\/p>\n

5) developing strategies and tools that will support the 22 volunteer fire departments in their recruitment and retention activities.<\/p>\n
