For instance, when can the child\u00a0turn from rear-facing to forward-facing, move into a belt-positioning booster seat, wear only the\u00a0seat belt without a booster seat? The answer is easy. Do not be in a rush to move a child to\u00a0the next stage because they are <!--more-->safest in the stage they\u2019re in until they cannot be in it\u00a0anymore. When the child outgrows their current seat or stage by height and weight, then you\u00a0know it is time to move them to the next seat or stage.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of National Child Passenger Safety Week, September 18-24, 2016, the Madison\u00a0County Health Department and the Madison County Sheriff\u2019s Office are again teaming up with\u00a0the New York State Police to hold a child safety seat check. The event will be held on Friday,\u00a0September 23 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wal-Mart parking lot located on Upper Lenox\u00a0Avenue in Oneida. The rain date is September 30 at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>A few quick reminders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children are required by New York State law to ride in an appropriate child safety seat\u00a0in passenger vehicles until their eighth birthday.<\/li>\n<li>It is recommended that a child ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until they can\u00a0properly fit in the seat belt, which is usually 4\u20199\u201d tall and 100 pounds. So even after a\u00a0child turns 8 years old, it is often appropriate and safest to keep them in a belt-positioning booster seat. Some children benefit from a booster seat until they are 12\u00a0years old, depending on their size.<\/li>\n<li>Kids age 12 and under should ride in the back seat. The back seat is safer than the\u00a0front seat. Also, air bags in the front seat are made for adults, so if an air bag deploys\u00a0when a child or tween is riding in the front seat, they can be seriously injured or worse.\u00a0Use 13 as a rite of passage to ride in the front seat.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use a child safety seat that you do not know the history of or a seat that is more\u00a0than 6 years old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are planning to attend the child safety seat check at Walmart in Oneida Sept.\u00a023, please make sure that you have installed the car seat in your vehicle. That way, staff can\u00a0check for errors and teach you how to make any corrections. While seats may be checked\u00a0without the child present, bring the child with you if possible, so that staff can show you how\u00a0the child should properly fit in the car seat.<\/p>\n<p>This event is made possible with funding from the Governor\u2019s Traffic Safety Committee.
