This award\u00a0is named in honor of the first New York State historian (1895-1907), and is given in recognition of Roe\u2019s\u00a0distinguished service to and support of the public history community of New York State.<\/p>\n<p>Devin Lander,\u00a0New York State Historian, Gerald R Smith, President of the Association, and John Scherer, Trustee and\u00a0Chairman of the Awards Committee presented the award.<\/p>\n<p>The Madison County Clerk\u2019s office has been awarded numerous grants to identify, sort, catalog and\u00a0digitize historical documents held. In addition, a website was established to share history and <!--more-->the\u00a0indexes of holdings as well as some document images. Much of Madison County\u2019s rich local history has\u00a0been brought forth from obscurity, and this project continues.<\/p>\n<p>Records that comprise local government document the most fundamental events in our personal lives\u00a0and have over-arching significance to us as individuals and the communities in which we live. They\u00a0document our heritage and enhance education. The Clerk\u2019s office welcomes teacher and student groups\u00a0and instructs how to use these primary source documents on a regular basis. Projects result in growth\u00a0of historical tourism from genealogists and researchers visiting from across the country, enhancement in\u00a0communities\u2019 pride, as well as documenting how Madison County residents have influenced national\u00a0and world history.<\/p>\n<p>Roe states, \u201cThese projects take a team to accomplish&#8211; and they are such a talented, enthusiastic, and\u00a0valuable team\u2014historian, records management coordinator, deputies, and clerks . How can it get any\u00a0better than to receive an award for something you are passionate about, is meaningful, helps others,\u00a0and connects people?
