Thanks to the Big M in Sherburne, budding chemists will learn the answer to these questions and more through simple experiments with materials found around the home\u00a0during the Nov. 5 \u201cFamily Fun\u201d program.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople often picture chemists as white-coated scientists combining unusual liquids in a laboratory, but actually we are\u00a0all chemists!\u201d said Sarah Freedman, Friends of Rogers environmental educator. \u201cThis engaging program will illustrate\u00a0how chemistry concepts can explain everyday life observations.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Nov. 19, join Friends of Rogers to create hand-made paper with repurposed materials. Sponsored by Hummel\u2019s\u00a0Office Plus, this \u201cFamily Fun\u201d program gives participants the opportunity to repurpose everyday fibers into unique paper\u00a0creations.<\/p>\n

Papermaking is thought to have originated in China nearly 2,000 years ago. Paper as a writing medium evolved into its\u00a0use as bathroom tissue, food storage, and currency well before the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily Fun\u201d programs are held at 10:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month and last approximately one\u00a0hour. These programs provide interactive learning about the natural environment for people of all ages. During the\u00a0months of November and December, this unique educational series is being made possible thanks to the generosity of\u00a0Hummel\u2019s Office Plus and Big M.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are extremely grateful to Hummel\u2019s Office Plus and Big M for partnering with us,\u201d said Simon Solomon, executive\u00a0director. \u201cSince 2011, when Friends of Rogers saved Rogers Environmental Education Center from closing, we have\u00a0relied on the generosity of local businesses like Hummel\u2019s Office Plus and Big M to support community activities,\u00a0allowing this vital resource to be preserved \u2013 and to flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rogers Center is operated by Friends of Rogers\u00a0Environmental\u00a0Education Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that\u00a0offers educational programs for all ages. Summer hours are from 10 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Saturday, and from\u00a011 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
