\"\"<\/a>The New York State Police will conduct a week-long enforcement initiative to crack down on speeding and aggressive drivers across the state.\u00a0The \u201cSpeed Week\u201d campaign runs today through Tuesday, August 8.<\/p>\n

New York State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II said, \u201cThe goal of this campaign and our traffic enforcement efforts all year is to reduce speed related crashes and improve safe travel for drivers and passengers on New York\u2019s roads. Staying within the posted speed limits, driving defensively, and putting your smart phone away will reduce the number of fatal accidents and increase safety for everyone on the highway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speeding is listed as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes in New York State. In 2015, 343 people were killed and 18,191 people were injured in speed-related crashes statewide.<\/p>\n

During this summer\u2019s Speed Week,\u00a0Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles as part of the operation. The CITE vehicles allow Troopers to more easily identify motorists who are violating laws while driving. These vehicles blend in with everyday traffic but are unmistakeable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated.<\/p>\n

Speeding by all vehicle types, as well as other traffic violations, will be heavily enforced throughout the week in addition to normal year-round enforcement. Troopers will also be watching for other traffic violations, including distracted or impaired drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and drivers that are violating New York\u2019s Move Over law.<\/p>\n

During the August 2016 Speed Week campaign, State Police issued more than 21,600 traffic tickets, including 10,500 tickets for speeding, and nearly 650 for distracted driving.<\/p>\n

Funding for the Speed Week initiative is provided through a grant from the Governor\u2019s Traffic Safety Committee.<\/p>\n

The fines for speeding on 55 mph\u00a0highway\u00a0or posted 65 mph zones are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n

10\u00a0mph or less over the limit – min $45\/max $150
\n11- 30 mph over the limit – min $90\/max $300
\n31 mph or more over the limit – min $180\/max $600<\/p>\n

Second Conviction<\/em>
\n10 mph or less over the limit – min $45\/max $300
\n11 – 30 over the limit – min $90\u00a0\/max $450
\n31 or more over the limit – min $180\/max $750<\/p>\n

Third Conviction<\/em>
\n10 mph or less over the limit – min $45\/max $525
\n11 – 30 over the limit – min $90\u00a0\/max $675
\n31 or more over the limit – min $180\/max $975<\/p>\n

Court Surcharges are as follows:<\/strong>
\nTown or village courts – $93
\nOther Courts (city traffic courts, etc.) – $88<\/p>\n

Violation Point Structure:<\/strong>
\n1-10 mph over limit = 3 points
\n11-20 mph over limit = 4 points
\n21 – 30 mph over limit = 6 points
\n30 – 40 mph over limit = 8 points
