Wilcox was promoted at a ceremony at the Sheriff\u2019s Law Enforcement Building Thursday afternoon in front of his family, friends, co-workers, chiefs of police, members of the Madison County Board of Supervisors and\u00a0other County officials.<\/p>\n<p>At the ceremony, Acting Sheriff John Ball swore Wilcox into\u00a0his new position, responsible for all operations of the Sheriff\u2019s Office Criminal Division, which includes road patrol, criminal investigations, narcotics investigations, special operations (SWAT), marine\/snowmobile\/bicycle patrols, criminal records, and fleet operations. Wilcox will also have indirect oversight of the Sheriff\u2019s Civil Division and Pistol Permit Office operations, as well as the Sex Offender\u00a0Registry. Wilcox\u2019s daughter, Loryn, held the bible for her father to be sworn in with.<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox\u2019s daughter, Loryn, held the Bible used for her father&#8217;s swearing-in.<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox started with the Sheriff&#8217;s Office in January 1997 as a part-time correction officer. After completing the police academy, Wilcox became a deputy in August 1999, promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2004 and lieutenant in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox was supervisor of the Criminal Investigations Unit until 2013, when he returned to uniformed duty as operations lieutenant for the\u00a0Criminal Division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur county is so fortunate to have the leadership and professional competence of Bill Wilcox,&#8221; Ball said. &#8220;He, along with our deputy sheriffs, correction officers and those members of this office that have assembled today to witness this milestone, not only for the history of this Office, but in Captain Wilcox\u2019s career, are an incredible and invaluable team that takes to heart their role in keeping our community safe, around the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have full faith and complete trust in Captain Wilcox, and his\u00a0ability to successfully lead the Criminal Division as we continue enhancements to our daily operations, ensuring all facets of our commitment to public safety in our county are met. We are clearly in worrisome times today, with all that is going on in our country and around the world.
