OPL\u2019s Family\u00a0Saturday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0goes all out with face painting<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Families with children 2-years old up to 9 are invited to this month\u2019s edition of Family Super\u00a0Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to share face painting design instruction and hands-on practice with Francesca Nishimoto.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, OPL\u2019s Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander will have a story, craft and activities to share with the children and their parents or guardians.<\/span><\/p>\n

Learn the latest science through OPL\u2019s reading and discussion group<\/b><\/p>\n

Pushing the Limits, a grant-funded monthly reading and discussion program for adults, returns for a<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

second year in the first of four sessions on\u00a0Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0with Prof. Jen Herzog leading a discussion on Anna Smaill\u2019s dystopian novel \u201cThe Chimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the second year in a row, Herzog, assistant professor of biology at Herkimer County Community College, will lead the discussions in the four-book series, January through April 2018, and introduce cutting-edge science and environmental topics related to the books\u2019 themes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chimes,\u201d winner of the 2015 Man Booker prize for fiction, concerns a young orphan named Simon going to a war-wasted London dominated by a walled-in elitist cadre. It controls the destitute masses through melodic chimes played morning and night to mute memory and pacify resistance. Simon, however, still has the gift of memory, which stirs the plot and leads to insurrection. Herzog will introduce after discussion the latest research on the genetic and environmental sources of memory<\/p>\n

Future discussions will focus on \u201cLab Girl\u201d by Hope Jahren (Feb. 15<\/span><\/span>); \u201cThe Eleventh Plague\u201d by John S. Marr (March 22<\/span><\/span>); and \u201cThe Genesis Code\u201d by John Case (April 19<\/span><\/span>).<\/p>\n

The program is free and open to all adults, but pre-registration for the programs is strongly recommended. A limited number of copies of an upcoming program\u2019s book will be given at no charge to those who sign up for the discussion program at the library\u2019s circulation desk.<\/p>\n

Pushing the Limits, an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, is part of the Rural Gateways Grants program as administered by the Califa Library Group.<\/p>\n
