A new Humboldt penguin chick hatched at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo Feb. 25, and the\u00a0zoo is holding a vote to name the baby.<\/p>\n

The chick is a male offspring of penguin parents Frederico and Poquita. He weighed 69 grams\u00a0on his hatch day and had reached 1102 grams \u2013 just shy of 2.5 pounds — when weighed March 21.<\/p>\n

He is the 55th penguin hatchling since the zoo began breeding the threatened birds in 2006 as\u00a0part of the Species Survival Plan for Humboldt penguins overseen by the Association of Zoos &\u00a0Aquariums.<\/p>\n

Humboldt penguins are native to the Humboldt Current along the coast of Peru and Chile in\u00a0South America. Humboldt penguin populations have been severely declining in the wild, with\u00a0an estimated 30,000 remaining in Chile and under 10,000 in Peru.<\/p>\n

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is a leader in Humboldt penguin conservation. The new chick brings\u00a0the zoo\u2019s colony to 40 individuals. Many previous chicks hatched and raised at the zoo have\u00a0gone on to other AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to preserve the species while maintaining\u00a0genetic diversity, said Zoo Director Ted Fox.<\/p>\n

Depending on the recommendations of the SSP, the zoo has had as many as six penguin chicks\u00a0hatch in a given year. This year, the baby boy is the only hatchling.<\/p>\n

The new chick will be cared for by adults in the nest for a couple of months before it can join\u00a0the colony. Parents Frederico and Poquita have had 12 other chicks hatch at the zoo. This chick\u00a0is being fostered by Veinte and Isa, a younger pair that the zoo wants to gain more parental\u00a0experience.<\/p>\n

Zookeepers hope the new zoo baby will be on exhibit in time for the summer season.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the zoo is holding a naming vote. Animal care staff chose five names that reflect\u00a0the species\u2019 native lands. The public can help them decide by voting at\u00a0rosamondgiffordzoo.org\/naming-contest.<\/p>\n

Here are the potential names nominated by the zoo\u2019s penguin care team:<\/p>\n

F\u00e9lix \u2013 \u201cLucky\u201d
\nInigo \u2013 \u201cFiery\u201d
\nOscar \u2013 \u201cFriend of deer\u201d
\nRafael \u2013 Healing angel
\nGarc\u00eca — Common Peruvian surname<\/p>\n
