An informational meeting for interested youth and parents takes place at\u00a02 p.m.\u00a0Sunday, May 20, at Utica Post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/?q=229,+409+Herkimer+Road,+Utica&amp;entry=gmail&amp;source=g\">229, 409 Herkimer Road, Utica<\/a>. The program is open to youth in 7th through 12th grades in\u00a0Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93766\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93766\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-93766\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/unnamed-1-3-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/unnamed-1-3-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/unnamed-1-3-150x98.jpg 150w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/unnamed-1-3-900x588.jpg 900w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/unnamed-1-3-400x261.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pictured are some of the instruments obtained for the Mid-York Musketeers Drum &amp; Bugle Corps, on display at Utica Post 229.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The corps goes by the name of Mid-York Musketeers, and is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, explained\u00a0Madison County\u00a0American Legion Commander Bill Jenkins, who is corps director and drum instructor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received a grant to put towards equipment and we have already purchased some,\u201d said Jenkins, a retired high school drum teacher who played in the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point and in the West Point Hellcats Drum and Bugle Corps. He later played in<!--more--> the Pride of the Orange Marching Band at Syracuse University and taught in several school districts. Before retiring, he spent 25 years at Morrisville-Eaton Central School District as drumline instructor and assistant band director. His drumline won many championships in both field and parade competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProviding programs for children and youth is one of the pillars of the American Legion,\u201d George noted. \u201cWe already sponsor Legion baseball, and now we\u2019re offering the opportunity for youth to be part of a musical marching team.\u201d He added: \u201cFor many years Utica Post had sponsored the Magnificent Yankees Drum and Bugle Corps, so we\u2019re very excited to bring Legion-sponsored drum-and-bugle-corps activity back to the Mohawk Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins noted: \u201cWe\u2019re looking for boys and girls who want to play drums and brass, and represent the Mohawk Valley with excellence, pride, honor and respect. As our motto states, we\u2019ll be \u2018the Pride of the Mohawk Valley\u2019.\u201d Rehearsals will be on Monday and\u00a0Wednesday\u00a0evenings from 5 to 8 at Utica Post 229. He said they already have enough equipment and uniforms for a drumline and color guard.
