Extreme heat can affect your health, and the health of your neighbors and\u00a0even pets. Madison County Health Department recommends the following steps to prevent a heat-related\u00a0illness, especially during extreme heat that lasts several day:<\/p>\n<p>STAY COOL.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Stay in the shade as much as possible when you are outside.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Wear lightweight, light colored clothing.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Take a cool shower, bath, or apply a towel with cool water to your neck to cool down.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Keep shades and curtains in your home closed while indoors.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 During a heat spell, don\u2019t reply only on a fan to keep you cool; go to an air conditioned place like a mall\u00a0or public building to cool off at least for a few hours a day.<\/p>\n<p>STAY HYDRATED.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Remind your family to drink water throughout the day and don\u2019t wait until you are thirsty to drink.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 If working or playing outside, drink 2-4 cups of cool, nonalcoholic and caffeine-free liquids an hour to<!--more--><br \/>\nhelp keep your body temperature normal and avoid dehydration.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Avoid working or playing outside during the hottest part of the day (11am to 4pm).<\/p>\n<p>TUNE IN.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Know the weather forecast in your area, check for heat alerts when planning outdoor play, work, and<br \/>\nchores.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Keep kids out of hot cars.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Recognize the symptoms of heat-related illness. Dehydration starts with thirst and progresses to cold<br \/>\nclammy skin, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps. Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency with<br \/>\nsymptoms of hot, dry skin, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
