Journey to Alaska with Wells Horton<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central New York landscape photographer Wells Horton will take\nyou on a journey cross-country to Alaska. His adventure has captured many scenic\npanoramas and rarely seen wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation is free and open to the public. Donations are\nalways appreciated to help support the GSC\u2019s conservation efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This truly is an Alaskan adventure that you will never forget,\nand you don\u2019t even have to leave New York state; just come to the Great Swamp Conservancy\nat 1 p.m. Jan. 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSC launches shoe drive\nfundraiser to raise money for environmental education<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GSC is conducting a shoe drive from Jan. 14 through March\n14, 2019, to raise funds for environmental educational programs. The GSC will earn\nfunds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes\ncollected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those\ndollars will benefit the community. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used\nand new shoes at the GSC main office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs\nnetwork of small business partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in\nhelping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries\nwhere economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the\nshoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their\nfamilies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send\nto her son to law school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Rusty Patane,\nassistant director. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets,\nand they would like to donate them to the GSC. By doing so, we raise money for the\nvarious educational programs that we offer, and we have the chance to help families\nin developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the GSC, the shoes\nwill be given a second chance and make a difference in people\u2019s lives around the\nworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GSC is a 501(c)(3) nature center dedicated to educating children\nand adults about the necessity to protect and nurture the few remaining wild\/green\nspaces in our local area, to teach children the need for biodiversity and to appreciate\nand enjoy the beauty of the out of doors. The GSC brings a combination of educational,\ncultural, recreational and social elements based on nature, history and art to our\ncommunity. Programs are geared toward helping children to develop a sense of community\nwith and value for the natural environment. We at the GSC are committed to the belief\nthat children who have a positive experience with nature are more likely to become\nadults who are stewards of Mother Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
