In 2017 the average student loan debt was $39,400. Our tax dollars\nshould be focused on giving families who play by the rules relief, not using\nthem as a piggy bank for a progressive utopia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assemblyman John Salka represents the 121st&nbsp;Assembly\nDistrict, encompassing all of Madison County and portions of Oneida and Otsego\ncounties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>James issues statement\non the passage of the state DREAM Act<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to today&#8217;s passage of the Jose Peralta New York\nstate DREAM Act in the State Legislature, Attorney General Letitia James\nreleased the following statement:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cToday is an important\nday for our immigrant communities, but also for New Yorkers who believe in\nequal access to education for all. Immigration status should never be a reason\nthat an individual cannot pursue higher education and with the passage of the\nDREAM Act, we are getting one step closer to supporting thousands of students\nand families. I applaud the Legislature for acting swiftly to pass this\ncritical measure that will truly change lives.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Miller issues\nstatement on legislature\u2019s move to provide tuition assistance to illegal\nimmigrants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A statement from Assemblyman Brian Miller (R,I,C,Ref-New\nHartford)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhile I believe the\nmotive behind the DREAM Act is noble \u2013 to expand access to higher education \u2013 I\nbelieve those who voted in favor of it have done a disservice to the citizens\nof New York state, especially those who are college-bound or currently paying\nstudent loans. This legislation allows the use of our tax dollars to provide\ncollege tuition assistance to illegal immigrants, while legal residents find\nthemselves crushed under the weight of burdensome student loan debt.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe talk about the\nAmerican Dream and the right of so many to pursue it, but what about our\nresidents? They have dreams too. Many cannot afford to buy a home, save for\ntheir children\u2019s education, or simply make ends meet all because they can\u2019t get\nout from under their student loans while also burdened by our state\u2019s excessive\ntaxes. I simply believe we should do more for our citizens as that is who we\nare here to serve. We haven\u2019t gone far enough in cutting college costs for our\ncitizens and that&nbsp;should have been the priority.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assemblyman Miller represents the 101st&nbsp;District\nconsisting of parts of Delaware, Herkimer, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Sullivan and\nUlster counties.
