Michael Allcorn received the\nDr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award for his commitment to self-advocacy and\ncommunity service from the Self-Advocates of Central New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his adult life and\nin high school Michael was told that he would never obtain his job as a chef or\ncook. One day while on a walk, Michael decided that he would apply for his\ndream job and was hired on the spot. Now after nearly a year of employment at a\nlocal restaurant, he is being considered for a supervisor position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I first met him he was\nso timid,\u201d said Michael\u2019s job coach, Carl Grogan, who works at The Arc of\nMadison Cortland. \u201cHe had some negative experiences with other job coaches\nbefore moving to Oneida, but through proper training, he really broke out of\nhis shell.:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe man that he is today is\na completely different person than the man that I first met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a member of the Madison\nCounty Motivators, Michael advocates for increased to the wages for Direct\nSupport Professionals with the bFair2DirectCare movement. Michael became a member\nof the Madison County Motivators along with his wife Tish shortly after they\nmoved to the Oneida area. The Motivators are a Self-Advocacy group that\nencourages its members to stand up for themselves and others who are unable to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
