The event is presented as part of the Library\u2019s \u201cWarming\nup to Winter\u201d program series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Quartet is comprised of John Delia, John Flaver, Tom McKay,\nand Ed O\u2019Rourke. The talented musicians will perform selections from a variety of\ngenres, including light classics, jazz, Dixieland, ragtime, and popular music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Watercolor Workshop with\nLocal Artist<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will welcome back local artist Richard\nMarchant\u2014winner of the Fine Arts Best in Show Award at the 2018 NYS Fair\u2014to lead\na hands-on watercolor workshop. The program will be held on Saturday, March 2 at\n10:30 am in the Community Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using high quality reproductions of Rick\u2019s own barn sketch, participants\nwill be led through the process of shading and coloring the image with watercolors,\npencils, and pastels to produce their own unique creations. The workshop is open\nto teenagers and adults. All materials will be provided. Class size is limited to\nensure program quality. Call or stop by the Library to reserve a spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop is presented as part of the Library\u2019s \u201cWarming\nup to Winter\u201d program series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Interactive Junior Book\nClub<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Wild and Wonderful Readers\u201d junior book club will hold its\nnext meeting on Tuesday, March 5 at 3:30 pm in the Cazenovia Public Library Story\nGarden Room. The session will combine book discussion, games, and hands-on creative\nactivities. The group will discuss Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl\nShurtliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charming and funny fairy tale goes behind the scenes of Rumpelstiltskin.\nSet in a magic kingdom, the story reveals Rumpelstiltskin\u2019s childhood and youth,\nexplaining why his name is important, how he is able to spin straw into gold, and\nwhy he is awarded a firstborn child for helping the miller\u2019s daughter-turned-queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The junior book club is open to children ages 9-14. Books are\navailable at the circulation desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mini Collage Workshop<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library invites artists of all skill levels\nto the Community Room for a fun and relaxing \u201cMini Collage\u201d workshop. Local counselor\nPauline Cecere LCSW will lead the hands-on program on Thursday, March 7 at 7 pm.\nThe event is presented as part of the Library\u2019s \u201cWarming up to Winter\u201d program series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants (ages 16+) will discover the joy and beauty of creating\nminiature collages (2.5\u201d x 3.5\u201d) using materials from nature and small items from\nthe \u201cjunk drawer.\u201d No artistic experience required. Class size is limited to ensure\nprogram quality. Call or stop by the Library to reserve a spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cArt for Kids\u201d Program\nSeries continues<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children ages 8-14 are invited to join Museum Educator Pat Hill\nat the Cazenovia Public Library for the next installment of Art for Kids! The hands-on\nprogram will be held Friday, March 8 at 1:30 pm in the Community Room. Discussion\nand activities will focus on the life and art of Ted Harrison (1926-2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward Hardy \u201cTed\u201d Harrison was an English-Canadian artist who\nreceived national acclaim for his colorful landscape paintings of the Yukon. Born\nin Wingate, England, Harrison studied at the West Hartlepool School of Art, where\nhe later taught for three decades. His artistic career tool off when he relocated\nto Northern Canada, where he was inspired by the rustic landscapes of the area.\nHis vivid and somewhat whimsical depictions of the Canadian Northwest are characterized\nby their almost psychedelic color palettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the March Art for Kids, participants will examine Harrison\u2019s\nbright and bold arctic landscapes and create their own works in the artist\u2019s style.\nAll materials will be provided. Class size is limited to ensure program quality.\nCall or stop by the Library to reserve a spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants will qualify for the chance to win a beautiful art\nset donated by a good friend of the Library. The kit contains 178 pieces, including\ncolored markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolor cakes, oil pastels, acrylic\npaint tubes, and much more\u2014all arranged in a beautiful wooden case with adjustable\ntrays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Celebrating Children\u2019s\nBook Author Mo Willems<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will partner with the Fenimore Art\nMuseum to present a special program celebrating the work of children\u2019s book author\nand illustrator Mo Willems. The program will be held Saturday, March 9 at 10:30\nam in the Community Room. Presenter Barbara Luhmann will focus on Should I Share\nMy Ice Cream (2011), a book in Willems\u2019 award-winning series, Elephant &amp; Piggie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luhmann is the School and Youth Program Coordinator for the Farmers\u2019\nMuseum and the Fenimore Art Museum. Her presentation will feature a story, a bingo\ngame, and a special treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fenimore Art Museum will present \u201cElephant &amp; Piggie in\nWe are Art\u201d April 2-May 15. The exhibition will feature artwork and drawings by\nMo Willems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The free event is presented as part of the Library\u2019s \u201cWarming\nup to Winter\u201d program series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Academy Award-winning film\nBohemian Rhapsody<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will offer free screenings of Bohemian\nRhapsody at 1 and 6:30 pm on Wednesday, March 13 in the Community Room. The 2018\nbiographical film of Freddie Mercury won four accolades at the 91st Academy Awards:\nBest Actor (Rami Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing;\nit was also nominated for Best Picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Freddie Mercury, lead singer\nof the British rock band Queen. The film follows the singer&#8217;s life from the time\nhe joins the band in 1970 to Queen\u2019s 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium\nin London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film is rated PG-13 and runs 134 minutes. Kogut is a Cazenovia College graduate with more than 20 years of experience working in pre-K education. An active community member and a mother of two young children, Kogut is a perfect fit for her new role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cazenovia Public Library Literacy Outreach has provided free\nliteracy services since 2006, offering programs in partnership with CazCares, Madison\nCounty Reads Ahead, and New Woodstock Free Library. The Story Room Family Literacy\nProgram, which operates out of CazCares Food Pantry (101 Nelson Street), provides\nearly literacy, adult literacy, and parenting programs. Kogut will work in the Story\nRoom on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 am-12 pm. Her warmth, knowledge,\nand skills are sure to enrich the lives of all who walk through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kogut\nwill replace literacy coordinator Marli Stahler, who plans to retire at year\u2019s end.\nA dynamic and highly skilled educator, Stahler has been an asset to the Library\u2019s\nLiteracy Outreach since 2016. The Library is extremely grateful for her many contributions\nand dedication to promoting literacy in the Cazenovia area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking in the Story Room, with the children and families, with\nGigi, and with all the unbelievable staff has been a tremendous gift in my life,\u201d\nsaid Stahler. \u201cI thank you all for your positivity, enthusiasm, and constant support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, contact Carla Zimmerman at (315) 559-7591\nor the Library at (315) 655-9322.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Family Literacy Outreach\nat CazCares results in big pay-off for children and parents<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cazenovia Public Library Literacy Outreach has provided free\nliteracy services to the community since 2006, offering programs in partnership\nwith CazCares, Madison County Reads Ahead, and New Woodstock Free Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Story Room Family Literacy Program, which operates out of\nCazCares Food Pantry (101 Nelson Street), provides valuable early literacy, adult\nliteracy, and parenting programs to visitors. In 2018, the program experienced a\nnotable increase in its numbers. In total, the Story Room recorded 788 children\u2019s\nvisits (100 more than the previous year) and 2,083 books distributed (500 more than\nthe previous year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled that so many children\u2019s books are taken home to be enjoyed over and over again,\u201d said Library Director Betsy Kennedy. \u201cStudies show that the number of books in a home is a good indicator of a child\u2019s readiness for Kindergarten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each summer, CazCares opens an additional learning area for school-age\nchildren. The Story Room numbers were robust throughout the 2018 summer season as\na result of the expansion and participation in the popular Summer Reading and Family\nRead-Aloud programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 200 parents consulted with Cazenovia Public Library literacy\ncoordinators Carla Zimmerman, Marli Stahler (retired December 2018), and Karen Kogut\n(started November 2018) on reading habits, parenting topics, kindergarten readiness,\nand more. Of those parents, 63 also attended a series of nine parent workshops presented\nby Kim Nowakowski of BRiDGES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll parents look to build strong families, and the workshops help them to further this goal,\u201d Kogut said. \u201cThe Story Room is a safe, comfortable environment not just for children, but also for parents and caregivers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2018 success of the Library\u2019s family literacy outreach exceeded\nexpectation. Photo taken by Brittany Coleman.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cazenoviapubliclibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cazenovia Public Library<\/a> Literacy Outreach has provided free\nliteracy services since 2006. Guided by <a href=\"http:\/\/literacycoalitionmadisoncountyny.org\/mcra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madison\nCounty Reads Ahead<\/a>, CPL ended 2018 with a total of 330 adult tutoring sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MCRA trains volunteer literacy tutors and recruits potential\nlearners 18 years of age and older who want to improve their basic English language\nskills, earn a high school equivalency diploma (TASC, formerly GED) or learn English\nas a Second Language. MCRA also provides all necessary textbooks and informational\nworkshops. Last year, 20 adult learners received free weekly one-on-one tutoring\nsessions from 11 well-trained, dedicated volunteer tutors as a result of the collaboration\nbetween MCRA and CPL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe strength of our adult literacy program is our one-on-one focus, &#8221; said  <br>Literacy Coordinator Carla Zimmerman. &#8220;We can tailor the learning plans to the needs and learning style of the student. Our tutors are trained to be learner-centered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ESL learners hailed from the Far and Middle East, Eastern Europe\nand Central America. Many of CPL\u2019s TASC students required individualized learning\nplans as a result of Individualized Education Program recommendations put in place\nby the high schools they previously attended. A majority of these learners made\ngreat progress towards the 12th grade equivalency required for successful completion\nof TASC.
