Oneida County man charged with Leandra\u2019s Law after driving his car into a snowbank <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

On March 10, 2019, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Trooper\nJeffrey Wegrzyn observed a gray Volkswagen traveling on Turin Road going 63 mph\nin a 40-mph zone. While turning on the vehicle, the Oneida County 911 Center\nbegan dispatching a \u201cBe On the Lookout\u201d for that vehicle as being an erratic\ndriver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wegrzyn lost sight of the vehicle and continued southbound\nwhere he observed the vehicle disabled in a snowbank, with the driver in an\nunconscious state and the accelerator fully depressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Trooper David Todora arrived on scene to assist, the\ndriver, later identified as Jarid Taciak, 37, of Stedman Road, Lee Center, became\nconscious and actively tried to free the vehicle from the snowbank. Taciak, who\nhad a 4-year-old child in the back seat and not properly secured in a child\nseat, refused to follow verbal commands to shut the vehicle off and exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troopers were able to breach the driver\u2019s side window and\nunlock the doors. Taciak then began to punch and kick Wegrzyn, who was\nsuccessful in putting the vehicle in park. Todora then applied a one-second\nburst of pepper spray toward Taciak in an attempt to gain compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troopers then removed the child from the vehicle and secured\nhim in the police vehicle; with the assistance of the Rome Police Department, troopers\nwere able to get Taciak into custody without further incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taciak was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated,\na class E felony; endangering the welfare of a child, seventh-degree criminal\npossession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and obstructing\ngovernmental administration, all class A misdemeanors; and numerous traffic\nviolations including child not properly restrained and speeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was transported to the Oneida County Jail for centralized\narraignment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
