Community effort for web

(Town of Fenner, NY – Nov. 2014) The Friends and Neighbors of Madison County’s Nichols Pond Park gathered the evening of Sept. 4 to erect a new Pavilion at the Park.  After approval from the County Parks Commission and prefabrication by a member of the area’s Amish community, approximately twenty five ‘Friends of the Park’ gathered and erected the new Pavilion situated near the Old Stockade area of the Park.

The pavilion project was initiated by the Parks Commission to meet the growing number of requests for use of pavilions by local families and groups using the county parks.  It was decided that in keeping with the rustic/natural beauty of the Park, the new Pavilion should be of post and beam construction.

The design was finalized and bids were obtained for supplying the wood and materials and pre-fabricating the structure so that it could be erected as a community project by the Friends of the Park.

This new Pavilion was engineered by a local Madison County Engineer and the plans and specifications were approved by the County Planning Department for the Madison County Parks Commission.  In preparation, the park staff aided by a DSS Work Crew, leveled the area and poured a floating concrete pad for the Pavilion in advance.

On a late summer evening, approximately 25 ‘Friends of the Park’ which included members of the Amish Youth Group, gathered to erect the new pavilion. The group worked together to assemble the 8 x 8 posts and beams with pegged mortise and tenon joints.   Ropes and man-power prevailed as the main beams and roof members were lifted into place.  A roof deck of finished tongue and groove topped with metal roofing finished off the structure.  In just slightly more than three hours, construction was complete and the group sat down for a barbeque and covered dish picnic and fellowship.

The Park Commission extends its appreciation to the many members of the community who assisted with the completion of this project.
